Good idea, or bad idea? Or someplace in between?

The U.S. Census Bureau announced Friday that it is seeking advice on how to address lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender populations in implementing the once-a-decade census.

The census, which has never counted LGBT people directly, has indirectly referenced gay people through its count of same-sex married couples and "unmarried partner" households in the past.

I suppose it makes sense, considering all the other data they collect. I wonder if some might be against it, fearing the number might come out low and/or be under counted.

Marketing folks who live and breath demographic info would be in heaven. As is, I wish the Census Bureau would find a way to bring in money from all the private enterprises that mine all that data the government hands them for free. If they can auction off wireless spectrum, there ought to be a way to work this.
