Damn as a father of a high school junior, this is so scary. Walk around a high school and what is it, pure chance? that not everyone can fit in and that some will suffer from anxiety and feelings of not belonging/not being mainstream. Does that automatically lead to self-loathing? How do we as a society help address that? Its got to start with inclusion, not exclusion. We talk about youth sports here, and having raised two kids who participated, its all too obvious that kids learn exclusionary traits very early from their parents.
It doesn't have to be trophies for all, or snack time, but reflecting back, more effort needs to be made to teach our youth to lean to include others not exclude, even when they may have some deficiency in performance, whatever. The best coaching I saw in youth sports was when one year I was an assistant coach and I saw the head coach demand 100% of every player's capability. If the RF couldn't catch a fly, that was ok, but he better damn sure give 100% on every pitch backing up throws to 1st and cutting off balls to the alley; it was so eye opening because I did not realize how inclusive that was and how invested everyone became into the team. Its my best memory from youth sports.
