FWIW, I've been following the Blago trial, notably the Blago Blog on the Sun Times' site.

http://blogs.suntimes.com/blago/

The level of sheer craziness of this guy continues to shine and gets better everyday.

He considered appointing Oprah to Obama's senate seat and referred to her as a "kingmaker", called Jesse Jackson Jr. an "uber-African American", called his former chief of a staff a "****ing incompetent" and went as far as to considered asking the Terminator to leave the governor's office in California to replace Obama.

The Kwame Kilpatrick saga is something to behold, but this Blago trial is a hoot to read and listen to.

Re: The Blago Trial

Thanks for the reading material. I found my blog to follow during the summer. ;)

Re: The Blago Trial

CR, you'll love this:

Union leader Tom Balanoff testifies to a couple of other discussions spicy political discussions he had with the then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Balanoff testified that Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, a friend to then President-Elect Barack Obama, raised himself as a possibility for Blagojevich to appoint.

In a Nov. 24th meeting, Balanoff raises the point to Blagojevich.

Blagojevich bristled, he testified.

"That mother f-----, I wouldn't do s--- for him. Every chance he got he took a shot at me," Blagojevich said, according to Balanoff.

Giannoulias is now the Democratic nominee running for Senate. He was subpoenaed by the defense to testify in this case.

In the same meeting, Balanoff said he brought up the possibility of U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky's appointment to the Senate.

Nope.

Blagojevich: "If she had any ancestors who came over on slave ships she'd be fine."

Awesome.

Awesome.

You've really got to hand it to Blago. It was really going to take someone special to measure up to Illinois' standards for corruption.

Blago got it done, and then some.

Re: The Blago Trial

Blago makes seedy George Ryan, currently enjoying the hospitality of the government, appear to be a honest man.

Couldn't "afford" to send the kids to college, but can buy a pair of ties for $429? Beautiful.

Re: The Blago Trial

This week's highlights:

-Patti wants to block the sale of the Cubs after Tribune called for impeachment

On a conference call, Patti Blagojevich is heard chiming in over her husband about Tribune Co.'s desire to get state help in selling the Cubs and Wrigley Field at the same time the newspaper was calling for the governor to be removed from office.

"Tell them to hold up that f------ Cubs s---," she said. "F--- them. F--- them. What kind of bulls--- is that?"

-Blago's hiding from budget director and only spends 2-8 hours a week in the office and bemoans his 13% approval rating with this beauty of a line:

The morning of Election Day, Rod Blagojevich goes on a rant to Greenlee, referencing his 13 percent approval rating.

"I f------ busted my a-- and pissed people off and gave your grandmother a free f------ ride on a bus. OK? I gave your f------ baby a chance to have health care," Blagojevich is heard saying on tape. "And what do I get for that? Only 13 percent of you all out there think I'm doing a good job. So f--- all of you."

To make matters worse, that same day, Blagojevich caught some flak trying to go to Obama's historic victory rally at Grant Park.

When Blagojevich requested credentials, it put up "red flags" with the Obama camp, prompting an e-mail from then-Obama staffer Anita Dunn that was forwarded to Greenlee.

The message: "WTF."

He also testified that he would say things to appease Blagojevich because the then-governor had a tendency to shut people out if he didn't like what they had to say.

That included Blagojevich's budget director John Filan. Greenlee said Blagojevich would hide in the bathroom, in the back of his office or leave early to avoid Filan.

Re: The Blago Trial

In a world chock-full of self-delusional politicians, Blago is the first
one in many years to have a legitimate claim to retiring the trophy, outright.

Re: The Blago Trial

The best thing you could say about Blago is that his shenanigans, unlike George Ryan's, never got anyone killed. Well, except for Chris Ryan.

Re: The Blago Trial

The defense has just rested without calling a single witness.

Until only a day or so ago, this was not expected.

Damn.

The whole thing would have been so much fun.

I'm very disappointed.

Re: The Blago Trial

Ah hell. I heard that the jury had a few questions to ask before they could move on.

The jury wasn't helped at all with all of the stipulations and scenarios they had to comb through if they reached a verdict.

Man this would suck if the jury in unable to get out of a deadlock.

Would someone tell Sam Adam Jr to STFU? Good grief this guy's a trip.
