The Cougar Life ads disappeared. Now I am getting bow tie ads on SportsJournalists.com. Thanks guys.

I don't think they help you get laid.

Can't say on the bow ties, but I can say that during my single days, a regular tie helped quite a bit. And I lived in a bit of a hippie neighborhood at the time when I discovered this thing about neckwear and women in bars.

I have three bow ties from thift stores, haven't worn any yet. Someday I will, when I learn how to tie one.

I have about a dozen but don't wear them anymore since I rarely get dressed up for work. Used to put them on all the time.

They don't have to be tweedy and if you wear them with confidence they're cool.

And yes, bow ties are chick magnets :)

I can't wait until bow ties are unfashionable again.

And folks, I was wearing glasses long before the hipsters made them cool.

And I'm a nerd.

Bow ties have never been unfashionable. Only the annoying self absorbed hipsters think they're either ironic or cool.

And glasses are, you know, mostly necessary. Wearing them as a fashion statement is kinda cool, I guess, or pathetic. Take your pick

As someone who wore glasses/contacts for nearly 20 years, there is nothing cool about either. If you've ever worn that yoke, you'd never wear a pair just because you think they look cool or something. Laser surgery was the best money I've ever spent.

As for the bow ties, I agree that they have never been out of style. It's all about how a man wears one. The swagger is that you are confident enough to wear one when people make similar comments to the ones earlier in this thread.

Yup. If you wear one like you're the **** of the walk, you're OK.

It's the rare person who doesn't feel conflicted when considering a bow tie.

If you're under 40 and wear a bow-tie other than with a tuxedo or as part of a costume, you're probably a ****ty person.

If you're over 55, you can wear whatever.

I imagine 40 to 55 is an awkward period in life as far as fashion. You are too old to try to seem hip but too young to not give a ****.

I'm not even 40 yet and I don't give a ****.

I went to the store the other day in pajama pants and a puke-stained undershirt.

"No" to bow ties.

There's a news anchor who is a friend of mine in another market who has taken to wearing them. I wince because, when I see him, all I see is the "bow tie". I don't hear what he's saying. I'd much rather be known for writing a sharp lead-in to a story than "the guy in the bow tie".

My litmus test on bow ties:

Don Draper wears a tie.

Harry Crane wears a bow tie.

Which one are you?

Look the best within the traditional contexts of fashion. I've found that garners the most respect. Once you're 63 or you're the head of a company, wear an ascot (which I do like to wear to weddings). Until then, leave the bow tie to the guy content to be mediocre.

Bow ties suck for everything but a tux

Like everything there's a spectrum of possibilities; you want to make a bow tie look stupid? Sure run up the little kid with the loose tie and wide neck space on his neck, or the way too small, likely clip on that Pee Wee's sporting.

But if you get a nice silk bow tie, tie it correctly (nice and even), coordinate it with the rest of your outfit (suit, shirt), now you're talking.

I don't think 40-55 is an awkward stage at all, actually that's the sweet spot when you've got the confidence to do whatever you want.
