I have a bike. But I live in an apartment. The bike's been in a spare room for a while because I don't want the chain or brake cords to rust. But, I'm running low on space and have to move the bike to the balcony.

If I put it out there, but cover it completely with a tarp (or as good as can be) will the chain and cords rust anyway?

I'm thinking if I cover it from the elements it will be fine. But, maybe I'm wrong?

Anyone know?

Thanks.

Truth be told, the wife wants it out of the apartment for one thing. The other reason, there's no real spot for it to hang in a corner in this too small apartment.

I would put in the storage locker downstairs, but it's too small too.

Sometimes I wish! And, I'm sure she wishes she could throw me out there from time to time.

It depends largely on the humidity in your area and how often (if ever)you will ride the bike.

Low humidity + frequent riding + frequent chain oiling = no rust

High humidity + infrequent riding + rare chain oiling = rust pile in the shape of a bicycle

If you don't ride it occasionally and it gets hot, the grease will probably also seep out of the wheel bearings and bottom bracket.

I'll be honest, less than frequent, but not "never."

And, it's high humidity, for sure.
