Beetle Bailey should retire

There are so few comics that I find even borderline humourous anymore. Its to the point where I often don't even read the funny pages, but the odd time I go through our one page in the paper, it's rare when it elicits even a small chuckle. The best that we run, sadly, is Dilbert. But that's it as far as coming close to consistently getting me to laugh. The one strip I do like, but we don't run, is Get Fuzzy. Makes me really miss the days of The Far Side.

I really enjoy Pearls Before Swine, and he (Pastis) does annotated collections of his strips, most of which are humorous rants about the 1930s morality code of the comics page and "legacy" strips like Beetle Bailey, Dennis the Menace, Garfield and The Family Circus that haven't been funny since the 1930s either. Basically, really old people read the comics page, and they get upset if you mention anything, or if anything changes on that page.

I'll occasionally look at Boondocks or Fox Trot online (It's probably been a couple years though...), but when Watterson stopped doing C&H when I was still in college, I stopped reaching for the comics.

I get the daily C&H on Facebook and still laugh my ass off. I used to read Sherman's Lagoon all the time but have even got away from that.

About the only comics I enjoy now are Zits and Baby Blues.

Our paper changed a bunch of comics a couple years ago, including axing Beetle Bailey, and you can't imagine the ****storm that followed. We reinstated Beetle a week or so later. I wouldn't miss it, nor Family Circus or Garfield, but it's stunning the number of (old) people who still read those religiously.

I rarely see Family Circus these days but when I do I only think of how it would be perverted (and that isn't even a strong enough word) by that site. Shows you how ****ed up I am.

I may be in the minority, but I still enjoy the daily comics especially if you read them in the right format....ie...have a different back story.

For example, Gil Thorp is not funny. But if you read it as Thorp is an 80-year-old drunk in every panel, then for some reason, it becomes funnier. They also had a great Modern Family joke this summer..someone mentions watching the show and Gil Thorp (who shares a character name) shrugs and goes "never heard of it." Gil also wrestled an old man this summer. Pure awesome.


Rex Morgan is funny if you imagine Rex as a closeted gay.

Mary Worth as having Dexter type tendencies off panel.

Marmaduke as being owned by Hitler.

Mark Trail....you don't need a story for Mark. You just know he is going to beat the ever loving **** out of someone during the course of a story arc. And that guy likely will have facial hair. Unless it is a deer. Last summer, they had a guy punch a deer. Mark also punched a cop a few summers ago. That was beyond cool.

Never read Chickweed Lane, but I'd put Blondie in the running for "best comic milf" too. She's drawn well.

But Blondie has nearly no personality. The one in 9 Chickweed Lane is more real, and quite intelligent.

Nope, dools. Dagwood isn't a part of it. Mr. Dithers takes her off in private and Dagwood has to listen through his sobs and wonder what in the Lord's name his boss is doing to her that he would never be allowed to. It's especially humiliating when he notices Mr. Dithers wore his rhinestone-studded belt to dinner and then Blondie can't sit down for two days afterward.

But at least he still has a job.
