Baseball draft question

Danny Almonte was passed over in the draft last year. He is 19 years old (I think).

He now plays for the Southern Illinois Miners of the independent Frontier League, a professional (albeit unaffiliated) league ... he has been paid.

Is he still draft eligible?

It doesn't necessarily go 50 rounds. A team can pass twice without making a selection. If every team does that before the 50th round, the draft is over.

And look at it this way, each team has 5-6 minor league teams to fill (AAA, AA, High A, Low A, Rookie, Short-Season). Most short seasons rosters are filled with players from this draft.

Think of all the scrapbooks it helps fill. Now mommy can say little Johnny was selected in the MLB draft and probably forget to add he was drafted 1,792 overall.

Among the more interesting second-day picks:

West Virginia quarterback Pat White was taken by the Angels in the 27th round. The Angels previously drafted White three years ago out of high school, but he chose football.

The Pirates took the son of manager Jim Tracy in the 20th round. Brian Tracy was a RHP at UCSB.

Seattle took Nevada's Rod Scurry, the son of the deceased ex-Pirate of the same name. I believe the older Rod died of a drug overdose.

I think four or five current MLB managers drafted their sons this year. Most of the second day is a waste of time. Half of those kids drafted in rounds 30-50 won't sign, instead going/returning to college.

Luke Hochevar was the top pick last year. Played four games for Fort Worth of the independent American Association.

Had played three years with U. of Tennessee. Drafted twice by the Dodgers, once in the 39th round, then the next year in the first round. But never signed with them.
