And here I thought Wal*Mart had everything!

As of late, I've been trying to upgrade my DVD collection, sparingly. You know, a movie here and there and the occasional diving into the $3.99 bin at the local K or Wal*marts.

So last night I trek to the local Wally world after work to snag a few things. One of the few things was Garden State; not the best movie of 2004, but a decent one with a good soundtrack.

One would think a major store like Wal*Mart would have this movie. But nope. It had 8,000 copies of 'Jersey Girl', probably 3,000 copies of 'How to lose a guy in 10 days', and way too many copies of 'Two for the Money'; but no Garden State. I searched through the regular DVD area: no luck. Searched the various $9.99, $6.49, $7.55 racks: no luck. Dove into the 'Two-for-$6.99-bin: no luck. I finally asked someone for help as a last resort and was surprised when the lady had no clue as to what I was even talking about. I guess I should have went toTarget.

The trip wasn't a total lost as I came home with the 30th anniv. edition of 'Blazing Saddles' ,'Spaceballs', and 'The Fifth Element' but I really wanted Garden State for some reason.

Anyone else with some disappointing trips to the store?

Any trip to Wal-Mart is disappointing--which is why I never go.

The main reason why I went there was for car wax, oil, windshield fluid and some other things. I usually go to Wally World/Target once every two months for those things because it's cheaper than most places. I also watched the South Park episode with Wall*Mart and it sort of made light of the situation.

The trip wasn't a total lost as I came home with the 30th anniv. edition of 'Blazing Saddles' ,'Spaceballs', and 'The Fifth Element' but I really wanted Garden State for some reason.

Are those versions edited at all? I've always been under the impression that any movie at Wal-Mart was edited for language and sexuality, because, you know, Wal-Mart is a family store. If I'm wrong, let me know. Not that I'll go shop there for movies, but if I'm in the store, I'll look.

Here's what I don't get about Wal-Mart: They offer edited versions of some CDs, and in some cases don't carry particular CDs, but they stock the shelves with DVDs like Sex In The City, Stop Snitchin (or something like that) from The Game, etc. WTF?

No movie I've ever gotten from Wal-Mart has been edited, and they sell some outrageous ones for a family store, like the unedited version of American Pie, Girl Next Door, etc.

TVs, furniture and any other 'big ticket' item is pretty much a given that low prices means low quality. But methinks the soda, candy and chips selection at Wal-Mart is no different than you'll fnd at any other grocer.

I disagree with Wal-Mart's politics and where they donate money. I also feel that much of what they do is counter-productive to society on certain levels. As such, I don't shop there.

There is no denying it, though. Wal-Mart has carved itself a nice chunk in America.

Oh, Wal-Mart absolutely edits CDs. I was on a trip in Wisconsin about 8 or 9 years ago and I went through the music section, looking for a CD to listen to on the drive back. I found the Metallica album where they did the live show with the symphony in San Francisco. I considered buying it until I saw an "EDITED" sticker on it, which prompted the following conversation:

Me: "Excuse me, this CD has an 'EDITED' sticker on it. What exactly has been edited on the CD?"

Clerk: "There ain't no swears on it."

Me: "Umm, what?"

Clerk (in snooty tone): "There ain't NO SWEARS on it."

I later learned that Wal-Mart sells what amounts to being their own version of albums, in that any CD that has any sort of foul language (or, if you're a Wisconsin Wal-Mart clerk, 'swears'), they've been edited off.

And that's why I will never buy a CD from Wal-Mart ever again, even if the disc is totally G-rated as far as language goes. I wouldn't want some store selling newspapers with edited versions of my stories, and I don't appreciate them doing that to musicians either. If they sold explicit versions AND edited versions of CDs, that would be a different story. But to just sell nothing but edited albums across the board (and have a large portion of their patrons not even realize what's going on), well, that just sucks.

Tino, I'm also a Wal-Hater, but the artists (or at least their labels) CONSENT to those edited versions being sold because they're happy to get $19.99 from whoever they can.

Wal-Mart edits CDs and doesn't sell certain magazines, like Maxim and Cosmo...but they'll sell pretty much every DVD known to man (except obvious soft-core stuff and porn). It's kind of interesting...no CDs with 50 Cent cursing, but you can buy 50's bad movie there. It's kind of odd that "Garden State" was missing....they must have just been out at your local store.
