How does a wheel rim freeze?
That's just what they were calling it where I was, I don't know if it has another name or what.
What happens is snow and ice builds up within the brake hardware or the wheel bearings, etc. I had driven to my destination through a veritable blizzard on Saturday.
In my case, the ice, snow, sand, salt, etc., re-froze overnight from Saturday to Sunday, the accumulation of the ice and the falling temps broke the brakes apart, and the pieces fell into the wheel base somehow, preventing the right rear wheel from turning. Based on what I read, the ice can also break your wheel bearings in the same way. It's a problem with Dodge Neon's, which is what I drove.
So its frozen literally, the snow and ice caused the problem, but its also frozen figuratively in the sense that the wheel couldn't move.
I've never had it happen or had heard of it either, and since I didn't know what the hell was going on myself when the problem manifested itself on Sunday morning, I blew my right rear tire trying to accelerate my way out of the problem and damaged the rim in the process. I can't believe I made it the 10 miles from my hotel to my game yesterday.
I'm lucky. Those bad boys could have given out in the bum**** cornland I drove through and I would've been ****ed. They could have given out and sent me hurtling into the ditch, a tree or another car. I actually had a dream the other night where I went flying into a group of trees, but woke up before I hit any of them.
Anyway, pray it doesn't happen to you, it's a ***** to get fixed, especially when you're seven hours from home, though I will say that dealership treated me right.
