While I was doing my Journalism thing at Wagner College, I did what a lot of college students did.
A lot of extracurricular activities.
The running joke in my family, or at least to my big brother, may he rest in peace, that my major in college wasn't History or Journalism, but Basketball Players 101, How to Party 302, and my favorite class, Advanced Hockey Players 312.
When some one asked me "what are you taking up in college?", my response was always the same thing.
One word, SPACE!
Seriously, though, I was an okay student in college, passing most of my classes, but I wanted to do some social stuff .
No, not just partying till I dropped or got sick, I joined a sorority.
Zeta Tau Alpha was the sorority that I joined and it had chapters all over the world, not just the United States and Canada.
Some of the sorority's most famous alumnae included, Lynda Bird Johnson Robb, daughter of former president Lyndon Baines Johnson, Susan Ford Bales, daughter of former president Gerald Ford, actress Betty Buckley, Phyllis George, former Miss America , and sportscaster, news reporter Faith Daniels, and current sportscaster, Erin Andrews.
I loved my time as a sorority sister even some of the things we did looking back on it now, make me wanna question my sanity and how badly did I want to join a sorority.
We were on the Seventh floor of Harbor View Hall dorm and while it wasn't all fun and games, we got along fine.
Being the Sports Diva that I was soon to become, Saturday and Wednesday nights were reserved to go over to Sutter Gymnasium, now the Spiro Sports Center, to watch some Wagner College Seahawks Men's basketball.
Need I say that there was a lot of screaming, yelling, and cursing like we all had lost our rabbit ass minds at the games, especially playing rivals like Seton Hall, CCNY,(that's City College of New York) and Fairleigh Dickinson.
There were four of us in the Zeta Tau Alpha Tau Epsilon pledge class and we looked very smart in our blue shirts and grey pants, not dresses like the other sorority classes wore .
We carried our little notebooks with the letters ZTA on it.
The notebooks were blue and grey also and they went everywhere with us as long as you were pledging.
I thought about my sorority while I was reading something about Erin Andrews.
I didn't see anything about my chapter and just had to know.
I received my answer from someone in the main chapter office in Indiana.
Sadly, no one on the Wagner College campus was interested in joining a sorority.
In 1986, the chapter was shut down even though the chapters at NYU and Long Island University's Brooklyn campus are thriving
Let's pack in Spiro Sports Center for a game against Fordham or Rhode Island, but no one wants to join a sorority anymore.
To paraphrase the words of the great coach of the University of Alabama, Paul "Bear" Bryant,
"You can't rally a school around a Math class."
I guess you can't get them to join a sorority either.
