Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

Perspective: Watched “Miracle” earlier today.

Al’s “DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?” is ****ing 42 years old! Al was already 35 years old when he gave us that gem.

So strong for so long.

He was on Bill Simmons' podcast several years ago, and over the course of an hour the laundry list of memorable sports moments that they went through that Al was involved with in some form or fashion was incredible. All the World Series, Super Bowls, the Miracle on Ice, Olympics, etc.
He was even a key player in the OJ chase. I forget all the details, but it had something to do with him playing tennis with OJ and Nicole and during the chase he was talking to OJ on the phone while OJ was in the Bronco. Can't remember if it was on or off the air, though.

I had forgotten the OJ connection!

Once OJ was holed up in his house Al did a phoner during the ABC coverage. They put some dude on the air claiming to be a witness shouting about how he could see OJ waving a gun and the guy signed off with "and a Bababooey to you all."

Al had to cut in to explain to Peter Jennings that it was a prank call and that "Bababooey" was "indicative of a certain radio host."

Harry was the only announcer who got better the more senile and drunk he was.

Oh, and Walton.

“Hey, now, wait one ****in' minute here ... ”

I guess anything can happen, but the betting favorite (h/t to Al’s every-game gambling reference) is Amazon.

NFL on Amazon is certainly a huge shift that seemed impossible only a few years ago. But our yearly Prime membership pays for itself in about the first two weeks so I’ll be there.

I think streaming subscription fatigue is real. But based on this year’s NFL ratings and the multi-billion dollar media contract, the shield doesn’t have anything to worry about.

If the rumors are true, an Al-Aikman booth is pretty appealing.

It was a “farcical phone call.” I remember hearing that live and wondering why anyone let that guy through. That was the most fake accent of all time.

Contrary to popular belief, it was not Captain Janks.

It's Been 21 Years Since The Best Prank Phone Call Ever: OJ Simpson

In a related development, Michele Tafoya is going to work for a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Minnesota and "will appear in some form at the CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) in Orlando in late February." She describes herself as a libertarian.

"I'm most conservative when it comes to I prefer a smaller government and I'd prefer a lot less of our tax dollars being spent the way they are. But I remain pro-choice."

She's terrible. Good riddance.

The guy telling Jennings, "I see and OJ and he looks really scared...". What an awesome moment.

Al also did the greatest fight of many of our lifetimes, Hagler-Hearns.

Forgot Al was on the mike for the Earthquake world series game. His knowledge of SF was better than most national news types seeing footage and not have a clue what it was showing.
