If I wasn't in the gallery I'd strongly consider Martinsville so I could say I worked Roswell, Trenton and Martinsville -- then write a book about *that* experience.

I've known several people who were hired who didn't have a connection to the paper. Of course it helps if you have a connection with someone at the paper, if that's what you're driving at.

And I would not expect them to do so, so it's not the same sort of "working against you."

But maybe you meant to use some blue font?...

Regardless, a younger person still would have a better chance of being hired from a lesser job up into one at the NYT than older person who has been around for a while and is now in a lesser place but trying to get back to a level where they once were.

I can think of one SEC writer on the older end of the learning curve (albeit with degree) who did it a few years ago and has adapted very well to the digital age.
Of course, you'll have to use 25 words when three will do like he does, but it can be done.

Without naming names, I know who you are talking about and I agree, he's done well in this new era I'm not surprised in the least.
