**** all these TV/movie threads.

No, seriously, **** them.

OK, I'm kidding. Kind of.

Anyway, I'm bored, so I'm starting another music-related thread. If nothing else, a drunken Machine Head will stumble upon it and keep it going for a night or two.

So here's the deal: Your 5 favorite songs from your 5 favorite artists. Links are encouraged. I'll add mine when I get home.

I understand that "favorite artists" is a concept that depends on age, mood and accessibility to and willingness to try recreational drugs, so pick your top 5 at the moment or of all time. I don't give a ****. I just want an excuse to put off reading this book in front of me that I'm vaguely interested in.

Three of those bands would have made my top 5 at various times in my life. YYZ is a great, great song. That immediately goes on my Gotta Get for the iPod list.

If we did a Top 5 albums thread, Trace would be on the list. But I cannot, for the life of me, get into anything else the band has done since. I tried to listen to the latest album and I don't know if it's because I put Trace on such a pedestal, but all the songs just sounded dull. And to me, dull is worse than bad. I mean, Farrar has a once-in-a-lifetime voice, but I can't stand to listen to it on anything since Trace. Jukebox is on ACD, right? I'll have to give it another listen.

Nicely done, YGBFKM. I'll give it my best ... :

Rush:

I say this in all seriousness: I've never been interested in Elvis Costello ... until I heard him on my son's Sesame Street DVD doing a parody of "Red Shoes." In case you're wondering, it's a duet with Elmo in which he relates the bummer that is trying to count to 10 after Cookie Monster ate his "Red 2." Holy ****, just typing that sentence cracks me up. Anyway, it's a serious earworm (I may or may not have spent my entire ride to work the other day singing verses out loud in my car), and it has me thinking about seeking out some of his music. "Red Shoes" is literally the only song of his I'm familiar with.

What kind of goofy-ass list is this? :D

I appreciate the links. I have some spare time staring me in the face this week, so I can check them out. Also, PM me some words and phrases when you get a chance. I could use another of those creative challenges.

Oingo Boingo is right up your sledgehammering way. Great music to pound **** to.

Will send words and phrases.

Yup ... about as subtle as a sledgehammer. But I do enjoy "Dead Man's Party."

That video's brilliant.

His early stuff is amazing. I'm not a big fan of his recent stuff, but you can't go wrong with the early albums.

My favorite album is "Get Happy!!" which is a tribute to the old Stax soul sound. I'd recommend that or "King of America," which is by far his best stab at doing Americana, and featured a good chunk of Elvis Presley's old band. My favorite from that album is "Suit of Lights":

Elton John:
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"
"Funeral For A Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)"
"Someone Saved My Life Tonight"
"High-Flying Bird"
"Skyline Pigeon (Piano Version)"

James Taylor:
"Long Ago and Far Away"
"Carolina In My Mind"
"On The 4th of July"
"I Will Follow"
"Music"

Marvin Gaye:
"What's Going On"
"What's Happening Brother"
"Right On"
"Inner City Blues"
"Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology Song)"

The Police:
"Synchroncity II"
"King Of Pain"
"Don't Stand So Close To Me"
"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic"
"Spirits In A Material World"

Steve Hackett:
"Spectral Mornings"
"Star of Sirius"
"Icarus Ascending"
"Shadow of the Hierophant"
"Every Day"

James Taylor:
"Long Ago and Far Away"
"Carolina In My Mind"
"On The 4th of July"
"I Will Follow"
"Music"

Not a fan of his collaboration with Oscar the Grouch. :D

OK, I've edited my list to include YouTube links for everything.

If you haven't seen the video for Butch Walker's song "Synthesizers," watch it now. Especially if you're a Dazed and Confused fan.

As hip as I am, I've NEVER heard a Butch Walker song. I will remedy that tonight.
