Amusing Butch Walker trivia: he started out as a teenager as the guitarist in the hair band Southgang. Their "hit" was "Tainted Angel." They were the first rock band to tour China.

Anyway, I'm bored, so I'm starting another music-related thread. If nothing else, a drunken Machine Head will stumble upon it and keep it going for a night or two.

So here's the deal: Your 5 favorite songs from your 5 favorite artists. Links are encouraged. I'll add mine when I get home.

I understand that "favorite artists" is a concept that depends on age, mood and accessibility to and willingness to try recreational drugs, so pick your top 5 at the moment or of all time. I don't give a ****. I just want an excuse to put off reading this book in front of me that I'm vaguely interested in.

I say this in all seriousness: I've never been interested in Elvis Costello ... until I heard him on my son's Sesame Street DVD doing a parody of "Red Shoes." In case you're wondering, it's a duet with Elmo in which he relates the bummer that is trying to count to 10 after Cookie Monster ate his "Red 2." Holy ****, just typing that sentence cracks me up. Anyway, it's a serious earworm (I may or may not have spent my entire ride to work the other day singing verses out loud in my car), and it has me thinking about seeking out some of his music. "Red Shoes" is literally the only song of his I'm familiar with.

That video's brilliant.

His early stuff is amazing. I'm not a big fan of his recent stuff, but you can't go wrong with the early albums.

My favorite album is "Get Happy!!" which is a tribute to the old Stax soul sound. I'd recommend that or "King of America," which is by far his best stab at doing Americana, and featured a good chunk of Elvis Presley's old band. My favorite from that album is "Suit of Lights":

I'm right there with you on loving Elvis Costello's old stuff, but I definitely side with My Aim is True and This Year's Model well ahead of Get Happy!! I guess I liked him more with his punky (if not punk) edge.
