Those are “temporary” medals. They give them back, their names are engraved in them and then there’s a traditional medal ceremony later.

I’ve got to think track and field would kill for some Drive To Survive treatment to stimulate interest. It was a little easier to follow on a casual basis in the 80s, when you had not only the Olympics but the Pan Am Games and Goodwill Games getting lots of airtime as well.

Great meet for the U.S. --28 medals and 10 golds (next best is Ethiopia with 10 and four). Americans swept the men's 100, 200 and shot put, took first and second in the men's 110 hurdles and women's pole vault, and first and third in the women's 400 hurdles and women's hammer. Likely medals coming tomorrow in the women's 800, women's 100 hurdles and both 4x400s

When my father was 15 he finished second in the 120 yard high hurdles at the Newark (NJ) city championships at Schools Stadium, which is still in use. He's 95 now and his silver medal is a cherished memento.

Honestly, I think the only thing that held her back is being about 20-30 years too late. Sydney McLaughlin is fast as hell, a devout Christian and model-quality attractive. But track doesn't even move the needle as much as swimming these days, and neither of them do in a non-Olympic year. Track's capacity for PR self-sabotage is legendary, such as when they tossed NFLer and Oregon Duck Devon Allen out of the 110 hurdles final for a false start when he left .099 seconds after the gun and the IAAF's made-up benchmark is that any reaction faster than .1 seconds is a false start. That idiocy was enough that it prompted me to rage-tweet on vacation. Someone accused me of bias towards the ol' home team but they used the same stupid rule to kick Usain Bolt out of the 100 final in 2011. The IAAF or World Athletics or whatever they're calling themselves is the prototypical example of the sort of organization that would screw up organization of a two-car parade.

And this is all before we begin to talk about drugs.

McLaughlin's 400 hurdles time would have placed seventh in the open 400 final, and just 1.6 seconds behind the 400 gold medalist.

That borders on the unreal.
