To clarify, I was there as a fan, not as a reporter... Friend got tickets thru a deal and I used marriott points for three nights in times square... pretty sure I used miles for the flight too.

I can't even remember the last Tuesday finish in a major. Of if there has been one.
The British Open and the PGA do it right with their playoff formats. Four/three holes is fair. It's easy for the British to do it because of the light situation in late July. I remember someone on here saying in 2008 after the Tiger-Rocco 19-hole epic that it set back changing the 18-hole playoff 20 years.

They're going to get swamped today and they've had like 5 inches of rain in the last week. If the USGA doesn't allow the "lift, clean and place" rule, which it is loathe to do, it could be pretty interesting.

Should the title of this thread change to 2013 U.S. Open Running Water?
I can't imagine the USGA allowing lift, clean and place. They'd rather finish next Wednesday than allow that. A six-hour round, with a couple of out-of-bounds wouldn't surprise me.
Shorter doesn't necessarily mean easier, especially if you're constantly in deep rough. I'd say 4 or 5-under as the winning score for the week.
Already had a three-hour weather delay Thursday morning, which pretty much guarantees the late starting times won't finish today. And more rain and lightning possible in the afternoon.

There isn't a golf course in the Northeast or mid-Atlantic region where they wouldn't have had the same problems with rain as at Merion.

There are 78 golfers on the course and as of now 15 are at par or better and of course nobody's played even two-thirds of the holes. So I'd say rain and all, Merion has so far defended itself.

I don't know why everyone thinks Merion is so short. The total yardage on course stats page of usopen.com has the course playing at 1,003,104 yards.

As for length, there's some variety. No. 10 is a par 4 playing 301 today and No. 18 is a par 4 playing 500 yards. Most of the par 3s are pretty long.
