Time to start the predictions. SI announces the winner on December 6.

I honestly can't think of anyone. SI's writers have done 'My Sportsman' pieces on Derrick Rose, VCU basketball, Abby Wambach, Johann Olav Koss, and Ryo Ishikawa.

The last 5 winners were Drew Brees, Derek Jeter, Michael Phelps, Brett Favre, and Dwayne Wade.

Thoughts?

Re: 2011 Sportsman of the Year?

If the USWNT had won gold, Abby in a walk.

But since they didn't, I'm going with Jetes as a write-in candidate.

Re: 2011 Sportsman of the Year?

Pshaw! The award should be called the Jeter of the Year

Re: 2011 Sportsman of the Year?

If it were based on merit and performance, it would be Djokovic. It won't be Djokovic. (Maybe Aaron Rodgers -- following in the Drew Brees mold -- or Nowitzki?)

Putting on my serious face...Djokovic and it's not close.

Re: 2011 Sportsman of the Year?

Novak Djokovic or La Russa, I'm betting.

Although if Federer never won it during his years of incredible dominance, Novak probably shouldn't either.

It's still fun looking at the complete list:

Oh for the days when track and field stars dominated.

Jerry Lucas in 1961, to me, remains the most baffling. Maris?

I could maybe see Dirk getting it.

Federer has never won it. So Djokovic sure as hell isn't winning it.

La Russa or Nowitzki. Long shots: Tim Thomas? Jim Calhoun? Cam Newton? Frank McCourt? (Seeing if you're paying attention.)

Or something way off the beaten path like that Athletes Who Care since it's a non-Olympic year.

Re: 2011 Sportsman of the Year?

Jesus. I was kidding with La Russa. I was just trying to make heads explode at the thought.

But, I suppose he just might win.

Re: 2011 Sportsman of the Year?

Peyton Manning. Newton is a pretty good choice. Any chance for Goodell / Smith?

Re: 2011 Sportsman of the Year?

Djokovic probably should win it, but I'm willing to guess he won't win...Aaron Rodgers?

I guess, if you want to turn it into the Disney commercial.

So what are you saying, it's not a Disney commercial??

Did the award go to ESPN to fill the CFB opening?

Re: 2011 Sportsman of the Year?

They're just going to say **** it and go LeBron.

This award used to mean something. Now it means they think they can sell the most magazines and fill the most multimedia programming.

Re: 2011 Sportsman of the Year?

I like Newton. Won a national title in the wake of the dad scandal, had the "icon" controversy and is currently in the midst of one the more surprising seasons in NFL history.

Re: 2011 Sportsman of the Year?

They have gone consecutive years in the same sport only one time -- 1983-84 with Mary Decker and Edwin Moses.

They could try to sell some kind of "purity of college sports" B.S. with (choose from any combination of) Brad Stevens, Chris Petersen and Andrew Luck.
