Why? You have eternal scoreboard over me — a Brewers fan. The Brewers can't even exact revenge on the Cardinals in the World Series, the best they can ever do is beat the Cardinals in the NLCS.

I still love the story about the argument that got Herzog tossed from the game. Don Denkinger was behind the plate in Game 7 after correctly calling the Orta play at first in Game 6.

There was a show on ESPN Classic a couple weeks ago on the '85 WS called "Five Reasons you can't blame Don Denkinger for the Cardinals losing the '85 World Series" (or some such cumbersome title). Did a very good job of showing that the bad call, like Bartman with the Cubs, was merely one small piece of a teamwide choke.

SSSHHHHHHH! St. Louis fans don't want to hear that.

They're the best fans in baseball, their billboards even say so. They would understand, I'm sure.

I was kind of a Cardinal fan in those days, based on having half their team on my roto team. I haven't paid much attention since. But I will definitely go along with their fans' claim that they are the best baseball fans. They certainly seem very knowledgeable as a whole. And they definitely seem to cheer for their team, as opposed to against another, as so many (particularly on this thread) seem to do.

I understand the joy of winning. I will never understand the joy gotten from another losing. That's little brother syndrome at its best. A lot of Cardinal haters here seem to be suffering.

Sorry, Junkie, but I have to take issue with this.

I've been to many a Cardinals game over the years, and there's just as many knowledgable baseball fans there as there have been at virtually every other park I've attended. There are also as many morons talking on their cell phones, roaring over a fly ball to short center or yakking to their buddies and not paying attention to the game at all.

But they believe their own bull****. That's why they give standing ovations to every Tom, **** and Harry wearing Cardinal red, for everything from a grand slam to taking a dump on the dugout steps. Can you think of any other fan base in baseball that has to keep reminding the world that they're the best?

I don't think you can point to one group of MLB fans and say they're No. 1. Some are better than others. Cardinals fans, at a base level, probably are in the upper half -- better than, say, Devil Rays fans or Nationals fans. But are they better than Yankees fans? Red Sox fans? Cubs fans? Dodgers fans? No. Nor are those fans better than Cardinals fans.

If they would just shut the **** up about how great they are, maybe we could get a better assessment.

PS -- If you think they don't cheer against other teams, you might not have been around a Cardinals-Cubs series. Or don't remember the "Mets are Pond Scum" era.

I believe Posnanski wrote a column several years ago calling out the Cardinals fans for being so full of it. The headline was priceless: "Cardinals fans root for themselves"
