My friends, this is the only place online that I feel like I can have a halfway decent exchange, so please indulge...

When you have a driveline coming out of your stomach and have to change the batteries on your portable life support system every 14-16 hours, you tend to be selective with the F--s you DO.give. This one has me, though, so I opine.

The war department recently released its list of recognized religions and by gosh, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was not listed as a CHRISTIAN denomination. So, of course, hilarity has ensued.

My three or four or six takes.

1) We voted for these numbnuts. We deserve this.
2) The war department left out the hyphen in Latter-Days on the press release. Of course .
3) Sen. Mike Lee has tweeted over 40 times about this. Um, couldn't some of that energy be expended on,.oh I don't know, ENDING THE F-----G WAR?!?
4) The tired argument of whether or not Mormons are Christians regurgitates online and hasn't changed one iota since those days I wore the white shirt and tie knocking on doors in Akron and Cleveland while the community reeled from Schottenheimer mismanaging the Browns and Jordan hitting the jumper over Craig Ehlo in Game 5. It's annoying.

5) If you don't think I'm a Christian, then I won't act Christlike and will retort with an imitation of a chicken singing Celo Green and say "Cluck you" or go South Park Mormon kid and say "s--- my balls." Let me know which one you prefer.

6) I am a child of God, follower of Christ, Father of 2 and stepfather of 5 (Total of 7 -- Mormon quota! )And many other things ending with "Springsteen fan" Full list available upon request. So there

For a guy who claimed to focus on "war fighting," Hegseth sure seems abnormally focused on "culture wars." It's an outrage and a slap in the face to anyone who has worn a uniform in service to this country that their faith - whatever it is - is disrespected by a country that proclaims a "freedom of religion." it was the reason the Pilgrims left England - a right to practice their faith as they saw fit.
But anyone who supported this President shouldn't be surprised. It's what they voted for.

Steering wide of any of the other issues, a religion gets to decide how it should be classified. The government arbitrarily doing so is loathsome to everything we are supposed to stand for in America. (Not that it is stopping anything lately.)

Arguably they should have just gone with the denomination name for everybody under the Christian umbrella. Did anybody really think there were Muslim Baptists or Buddhist Lutherans?

I would definitely say any religion that believes Jesus was their savior is a "Christian" one.

Except for Catholics, who somehow think they are above "Christian."

I think I like Rabbi Jonathan Sacks' formulation that Jews believe that Jesus was the son of God, but no more so than the rest of humanity.

I honestly don't care what you believe in or worship because I'm not going to believe in it and I'm not going to worship it. But I sure as hell don't think the government or any agency within the government should start setting definitions on religion into writing.

With the approach of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, I expected there would be reenactments of some of the associated battles. I did not anticipate that some of them would be real.

The First Amendment’s prohibition of government establishment of religion should be ironclad. Government recognition of religions should be a forbidden danger zone in which certain religions are deemed legitimate and others not. Any group could be excluded at the whim of who happens to be in power whether or not that is constitutional. I think the recent moves by the Pentagon’s despots violate the constitution, but the wall was breached by the decision to recognize any group.

On a more personal level, I don’t much care what religion anyone might be. It only becomes an issue when they expect me or others to conform or perform to their practices or restrictions. Then we’ll have a conversation about it.

I’ve known a few folks who have said they were affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some I’ve liked, some I didn’t. Their affiliation wasn’t a deciding factor.

I appreciate the ownership. But as I said on the first day of this administration, "Ain't no 'we' about this." Those in the LDS church who voted for 45/47 absolutely deserve this. Those who voted otherwise don't. The leopards are eating faces, as ever.

The Government and current Supreme Court's interpretation of the First Amendment continues to befuddle me to no end; anti-establishment of religion clause and Freedom of Religion could not be clearer IMHO. If someone in my 2nd year Con Law class raised the scenarios of today, Ten Commandment exhibits in the government offices/schools, government allowing only Protestant and Catholic activities and banning any others (Muslim, etc.), they would have been laughed out of class and given an F on their final exam.
