That was a tough play. The ball shouldn't have been thrown at all, and you can argue the first baseman should have stayed home anyway. Although it's tough to fault him when he's not totally sure what is going on behind him.
Was the Arkansas defense so bad that an unfortunate play would make them not want to turn a can of corn double play?

They are going to have to forgo an extra bat or two on the NIL market and bring in a top-shelf sports psychologist.
LSU is really good as always but at no point this year have they seemed invincible. I think Coastal takes a game off them and maybe even wins the thing.

They were pretty good all season. Omaha gets in their head. Two consecutive games, Arkansas committed mind-blowing errors in the 9th inning. Survived last night. Not tonight.

That's a really good analogy. Get the Arkansas LF additional security. I wish I was joking. But in this era of social media and gambling, the authorities need to be ready to track down some especially egregious fans and gamblers.

The play that started it all was the first baseman going halfway to second base chasing that ground ball. WTF? The 2B makes that play easily, he stays home and that's an out.
Cabrera did the same thing on what should have been the 27th out in Gallaraga's near perfecto, Tigers 2B was in perfect position to make the play. Yes, they did get him out at first, but if Gallaraga stays home it's a routine 4-3 and the guy is out by three feet.
I can't even begin to fathom why the SS immediately threw to third instead of what would have been an easy 6-4-3 DP.
And WTF do you pitch to the guy who hit a homer the inning before, with a base open and two outs?

I don't think I have ever seen a guy pass up a 6-4-3 DP before. Every time I have seen the shortstop throw to third for a force, the decision has been the proper one because the lead runner was vital and momentum was carrying the shortstop toward third and away from the best chance at a double play.
As to the line drive that should have been caught to end it, that strikes me as a perfect storm kind of deal. The ball is hit at a speed and trajectory such that slipping is especially problematic. If he drops the ball but keeps it in front of him, the tying run doesn't score.
Hate it for Arkansas.

The line drive to end it was unfortunate like the rest and a really tough play, but man that was pretty much completely in his glove.
The play at first to start the landslide, I just don't know what is right. It's easy to say in hindsight that the second baseman easily gets it, and he would have, but what if he was just a bit too far to the left and it's a single when maybe first could have made the out? It's funny, to bring my kid into it again, but he had a very similar play at first last week (high school level) and he went to the bag and then second baseman was nowhere near the ball. I have no idea what the second baseman was doing. He was upset about that play after the game saying he could have gotten it. He probably could have but then would they have gotten the out with the pitcher covering? Who knows.
Smarter baseball people than me probably know how first and second handle that play, but what is the protocol? It's a pressure situation in the ninth of a win or else CWS game but at the least it probably took the first baseman too far from the bag to overall risk it. As it stood, a single is better than a single with an error.
Of course then there was the whole double play that would have made it moot. What an amazing amount of ridiculous plays all at once.

I've always been told there is an imaginary line the first baseman doesn't cross, that he just has to assume the 2B will get there and get the ball, so go get to the bag. I'd also expect the 2B to call "I got it" or something.
