Anyone seen this? Miracle he's allegedly in stable condition.

Is this gonna be a Clint Malarchuk-type thing?
If so, hope this turns out the same.

Actually, I forgot...Malarchuk ended up in a crippling depression.
Let's hope for a full recovery - for both.

Ouch. Even if Zednik weren't a former Capital, I'd be sickened. Yikes.

I agree with the sentiment that they shouldn't have finished the game. I don't want to compare situations, but it would have been maybe one rung below forcing the teams to finish the game where Mike Coolbaugh was killed by the line drive.

And yes, Clint Malarchuk is also a former Capital. I'm convinced that team is cursed.

Just saw a clip (not too close up or gory, thank God) on ESPN.
Frightening stuff.

Reportedly in stable condition after surgery.

They aren't cursed...a lot of good players were with them in the 80's and 90's.

Happened in the same town? Malarchuk and Zednik?

I don't think so, but both players were Washington Capitals at one time. I don't think they were actually teammates though.

Just checked.... both happened in Buffalo.

That is really freaky.

That Malarchuk thing remains one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. the things that had to go right for him not to die on the ice boggle the mind.

The story prompted me to look up the Malarchuk clip on YouTube. Whoever that trainer was saved his life. Somehow slowed the bleeding and got him off the ice like 90 seconds after the injury happened.

IIRC, the trainer had been a medic in Vietnam (or some other war).

Oh, my God, just saw the clip on "Today. In slow motion, with a stream of blood flying out of his neck like tobacco juice. Thank God he's OK.

Thanks for warning me to avoid that show, PW. I was there the night Malarchuk damn near died. Haven't been back to a game since.

Be well, Mr. Zednik.

I read in the AP story that when the P.A. announcer announced that Zednik was stable at the hospital that the Sabre fans gave him a standing ovation. Can't help but think that Malarchuk was on their minds.

I know I said this previously, but I had a college roommate at the Malarchuk game. He said that fans all over the arena were passing out and throwing up in the aisles after Malarchuk got hurt.

Here's wishing Zednik a speedy recovery.

After re-reading the updated story, I really think the NHL messed up by not suspending, postponing and/or halting the game.

The official word out of the NHL is that they learned Zednik was in stable condition on the way to the hospital, so they decided to continue. I'm not entirely sure they knew that quickly, but that's what was being reported.

After Malarchuk, a number of levels of hockey mandated goaltenders to have the extra "scoop" neck protection added to goaltender masks. I wonder if this is the type of incident that would have professional and high-end junior leagues considering reinstating neck guards, or whether it will be seen as just a fluke.
