So, I tried searching if I'd already done a post like this, and came up empty. My apologies if I failed there. Please delete if so.

That said, what is your absolute favorite song?

At the risk of being an obvious former sportswriter, I think, over the years, I've settled on The Gaslight Anthem's "The '59 Sound."

Not saying it's the best song ever written. But for the last 10-plus years, it's given me the most joy and verve

But "Badlands" and "The Promised Land" are close, and have been my all-time favorites in the past. I assume this will fluctuate.

But, for now, it's T59S.

You?

Same. Depends on my mood.

Maybe Fade to Black if I’m pressed.

Honestly I love most of Metallica’s stuff and my favorites come off of Ride The Lightning but my favorites really come to memories. Seger for a summer crush, My Girl for another special person, All Right Now, Wonderful World, some Bowie, CCR, Queen and Pink Floyd. All depends on the day and mood.

I was going to say it's impossible, too many options... but realized no, my second-favorite song is impossible with too many options.

Number one is "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen.

Beautiful, haunting, brilliant. Came out when I was 16, which is probably the sweet spot for that kind of thing. I have the lyrics to the chorus framed on my desk, handwritten by Ian McCulloch, who wrote it. He says it's the greatest song ever written. I love Ian.

Short list for number two:
"Heroes" by David Bowie
"Waterloo Sunset" by The Kinks
"Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison
"Surrender" by Cheap Trick
"American Girl" by Tom Petty

Peggy-O -- Grateful Dead
Ramble On Rose -- Dead
When I Paint My Masterpiece -- Dead
Fast Car -- Tracy Chapman
Love and Happiness -- Al Green
Just Like Heaven -- The Cure
Harborcoat -- REM

It's one of those depending on the day.

I am a lifelong Elvis Costello fan. Seen him at least ten times.

My parents were familiar with a few songs, mostly because of me. Elvis announced a show at their favorite venue so they got tickets. Second row.

Midway through the show Elvis asked “my friend Bill” to join him onstage. Bill Walton comes out, and they do a duet of “Ramble On Rose.”

My dad was pretty giddy telling me about that.

Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Same No. 1 ranking it has held for 53 years.

I've got too many No. 1 songs, as it were, but if you've never heard this fantastic yet obscure rocker by Lyres, a Boston band, just crank it up to 11 and buckle up for a great ride ...

Costello is one of my all-time favorites. Never a big concertgoer, but saw him on the Brutal Youth tour. He opened with Clubland.

To answer UNCG's question though, probably my favorite song is West End Girls.

A few candidates:

— What A Good Boy, Barenaked Ladies
— Whiter Shade of Pale, Procol Harum
— On The Attack, Langhorne Slim
— From This Valley, The Civil Wars
— Trouble Every Day, Frank Zappa

In no particular order:

Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain - Willie Nelson
Crowded Table - The Highwomen
Georgia on My Mind - Ray Charles
Let's Stay Together - Al Green
Amarillo by Morning - George Strait

Way too many songs to choose from, but I will say that, just before I kicked off our daylong "Rainier to Ruston" road race relay earlier this summer, I played "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" by Chicago to give me a positive song in my head for my first 4.4-mile leg of the relay. (I don't wear earbuds or headphones while I jog).

Chicago is my favorite band, so one of their songs should be my favorite. Very tough decision. I usually have ID'd "Beginnings" mostly because of the horn solos during the jam segment. "I'm a Man" is also in the top 3 along with "Feelin' Stronger Every Day." If I had to choose ...... uh, I don't have to choose.

All three of those are winners — and two were recorded right out of the gate, on their first album.

My favorite Chicago song, Karaoke division, is “Saturday in the Park” because my vocal range is similar to Bobby Lamm’s. Peter Cetera? No can do. And Terry Kath’s is a bit too low and way too soulful.

Ooops. Add "25 or 6 to 4" to make it a Top 4 for me. I doesn't matter if Terry Kath can sing as long as he has his guitar.
