Sam Wyche, former coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, gets a new gig -- as a city councilman in Pickens, S.C. Good for Sam. Remember reading a story recently (as in, last year) about him still trying to coach, but he had a serious throat problem. He could barely speak.

Former NFL Coach Sam Wyche brought home another victory, defeating Democratic challenger Wesley Burbage for the Pickens seat on Pickens County Council.

Residents cast 6,478 votes for Wyche and 1,639 votes for Burbage.

Wyche defeated incumbent Ben Trotter in the Republican primary in June.

Former NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson defeated two-term incumbent Heather Fargo in high-turnout voting.
The final count for Johnson, with all precincts reporting, was 58 percent to Fargo's 42 percent.
Johnson's victory affirmed the city's craving for something decidedly flashier and campaigned on putting Sacramento on the map. During Fargo's tenure, she embraced slow and steady progress in California's capital city, where many workers are employed by state government.

Wyche was a QB coach for the Pickens (HS) Blue Flames when I was in the area. The starting QB was the head coach's son, and we had a funny quote, something to the effect of "How's he going to listen to me when we've got a super bowl coach on the sideline?"

He was fantastic to deal with.
