How is Michelle Wie ranked 10th in the world?

Opening round 82 at Oakmont in the first round of the U.S. Open.

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — Wie's misery, indeed.
On a truly rough day for the world's No. 10-ranked golfer, Michelle Wie shot an 11-over 82 on Thursday to play herself out of contention after one round of the U.S. Women's Open.
She couldn't drive the ball in the fairways, finding too many of Oakmont Country Club's 208 bunkers. Once she finally reached the 108-year-old course's infamously treacherous greens, her game got even worse.
"There was nothing I could do," Wie said.
It was another major disappointment for the golfer who was supposed to be the sport's next big thing not that long ago. Wie hasn't finished in the Top 10 in any major since the 2006 U.S. Open, when she was a high school senior.

Yet she's the 10th ranked player in the world?

She has a 3rd, a 5th and a 6th this year. That'll move you up the rankings quickly.

Hey, anything's possible. Irish Terry Conklin was ranked 10th before his before his fight with James "The Grim Reaper" Roper and never had a pro bout.

A lot of highly rated golfers miss the cut at the U.S. Open, men's and women's, every year.

Yep.... But with an opening round 82?
I like Wie. I hope she does well and eventually wins on tour. I'm not a hater.
I just never fathomed she would be on among the top 10 in the rankings.

Michelle's actually had a renaissance in this last year. Whether she's just done some growing up, realized mistakes, gotten out from under the thumb of Daddy... it looks like she has a chance to become the golfer everyone thought she would.

Heck, boxers stay in the rankings, even when they are dead.

Phil Mickelson missed the cut Friday in the Scottish Open.

How is Phil Mickelson ranked No. 2 in the world??

:o :o :o

It's Oakmont. If not the toughest course in the country, it's in the top-five. There's a 250-yard par-3 for the women, for chrissakes.

And a 600-yard-plus par-5. USGA set it up to where it said men vs. women, it's the same as the 2007 U.S. Open. Winning score was 5-over. Absolutely a brutally hard course.

He's won a tournament or two in the last few years, smartass.

How many events has Wie won?

Isn't Tiger still No. 1 in the men's rankings? Hard to invest a lot in them.

I'm covering this thing this week...I will say this, Wie's representative from IMG was very, very, very, very quick in the post-round. So much so that is was borderline demeaning to the print media; it would have been better had she not even made her available than to do what she did.
She marched her client in, said, "Where's ESPN?"
They got their two questions.
The IMG rep then said, "And the Golf Channel?"
They got two questions.
Then Wie, in the middle of answering her third question from us print boors, was interrupted with a booming, "one more!" from the IMG woman...and Wie was gone. Four quick questions and that was it.
That was after Thursday.
I'm of the thinking where I'd rather someone not show up at all than be patronized by some agent and treated like a peasant.

But, at least Wednesday's practice round press conference provided a gem:

QUESTION: You won a tournament now. You're still in college. Are you a Phi Beta Kappa yet?
MICHELLE WIE: No sorority for me yet, but it's been fun. It's been a lot of fun. You know, it's great, but I want to do better this year, and I just want to keep doing better and better. College is fun; it's a lot of hard work. It all pays off in the end.

Playthrough already proved you wrong, but to add to that..

How does the No. 2-ranked men's player score a NINE on the 18th hole today (and ended up missing the cut because of it).
This, on a course that's a birdie fest right now.

So, I'm guessing the short answer is "no."
