Hi!!!

So my paper has gone through around of buy outs and layoffs in the past year and I was one of the lucky ones to survive, but I am wondering now how lucky I really was. Rumors have it that there are more trim backs coming very soon!!! It is very depressing and makes me wonder if I will be able to retire as a newspaper woman down the road. Do you think there will be news papers in 25 years?? I don't think I do. That is just so very sad to me.

I am just ill that so many quality journalists are being sent packing, you have to wonder when the axe will fall on you also. I have heard that MacClatchy is going to announce major staffing news next week, probably Monday or tuesday at a several different papers. I hope it is not too terribly bad!!!

No pickle, you're not the only one depressed about our industry. It's frustrating because young people don't read newspapers anymore, so basically, every time someone dies we lose a reader we'll never get back.

I think a better question is will newspapers be around in 10 years?

I don't know the answer, but in the meantime, we should be doing everything we can to connect our product (and readers) to our Web sites. That's likely our future. Going digital would eliminate a mountain of overhead in our business (paper, ink, press and mailroom employees, cost of delivery).

Thank you for your even toned well thought response. I agree!! I have thought for years that the Web was the wave of the future and yet our newspaper still devotes probably 86% of its resources to the print version. Why can't we get advertisers to buy Web ads???

Wow that is a scary thought, no newspapers in 10 years. I never would have thought that 10 years ago!!
