Exactly. If Oklahoma State went by another name -- USC, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, etc. -- it would've had the inside track to play LSU for the BCS championship before it took the field Saturday night. As it was, it had to make up ground because it lacked the brand name, not to mention the SEC always getting the benefit of the doubt.

So winning five* consecutive national championships isn't worthy of the benefit of any doubt?

*-Six now, obviously, but less relevant for purposes of that particular point.

Had Alabama lost at LSU, I wouldn't be so opposed to a rematch, but it was in Tuscaloosa less than one month ago. And Oklahoma State has the better resume.

But to answer your question, no, the past five championships have nothing to do with this season. If anything, Florida getting its shot in 2006 and whipping Ohio State served as a reminder that funny things happen when teams get a chance to prove it on the field -- we won't ever know if the Pokes would've cashed in on their chance the same way the Gators did.

Weeden against the LSU secondary. Blackmon against Honey Badger. Oklahoma State's opportunistic defense against the sometimes mistake-prone Jefferson. I would've loved that game. Instead, we'll see two teams who might not throw it more than 8 yards down the field.

Rest assured this game will be less jabs and more hooks and upper cuts. These coaches are looking at film, finding spots to take shots. They will both do some crazy stuff. My guess is the hat actually pulls a few showstoppers.

No matter, this time around, the two will play a special and exciting game.

Given a night to sleep on this and think about it, it is absolutely absurd that there isn't a playoff system in college football. I know this is not great revelation, but the more I think about it, the more pissed I get. It's a joke. An absolute joke. We shouldn't let it go on. Media. Fans. Alumni. I know I don't show a lot of sympathy for the Boises and Houstons of the world, but that's within the system we have. And we have a messed up system. Look what Butler did in basketball. There should be a playoff. The fact that we can't design the perfect system right off the bat should not be an obstacle. Tweak it until it works. But people need to start banging this drum incessantly until they listen. Because this is just a slap in the face.

I think some people are putting too much emphasis on where some games are played. The visiting team has won in LSU vs. Alabama pretty frequently for a long time now. LSU is something like 32-1 in night games away from home in 10 seasons. I think the better programs thrive on the whole hostile-environment thing. Too much is being made of it being a home loss, in my opinion, knowing SEC history and the history of the rivalry.

They won't listen until they have to, and they don't have to until they stop making money. This is why I watch exactly one college football game after the first week of December: the I-AA national title game. I might bump that up to two in years where Army-Navy is compelling, but otherwise, for me, the season ends with the last conference title game until we get a playoff.
