He pitched the entire game on a gimpy ankle after twisting it on a collision at first in the first inning.

Trivia time: Seven pitchers born in the Dominican Republic have thrown no-hitters. How many can you name?

High school classmate living down there was at the game. They actually drew a decent crowd (20,000-plus) since it was Bark at the Park Night.

Old-fogey memory of the Marlins' first no-hitter by Al Leiter in 1996, when I was working on one of the South Florida papers' sports desks: It was the same Saturday the ValuJet crash occurred in the Everglades, and we had to roll sports early (I think the deadline was 10:30 instead of 11:30) so the A section could accommodate crash coverage. Didn't seem like a big deal at first because it wasn't a busy sports night aside from the Marlins game, which started at 7. Then Leiter pitched the no-hitter and we had to scramble. But it was a fast game, the beat writer and the desk did a terrific job and we got the section out on time.
