USFL Returning In 2010

Among my oddest internet purchases ever, were genuine USFL hats of the Gunslingers, the Birmingham Stallions and the Boston Breakers.
I also have hast from the Berlin Thunder hat, Chicago Blitz, NYNJ Hitmen, a Toronto Argonaut hat and a New Orleans Voodoo hat. Hell of a lid. RIP.
Screw a new football league, why not just "create" a league through Madden football, and air "games" week by week. Fans in specific areas would choose which players they drafted, and win money depending on how well their "team" did.

OK, we can all laugh at the USFL if we want, but there is no question that there were a number of players who had good pro careers who probably never would have gotten a look in the NFL if they hadn't proven themselves first in the USFL. Two that come immediately to mind were Sam Mills and Bobby Hebert.

Lupica was such a lapdog for the USFL during the trial, he should have been on retainer.

The last player of the USFL on an NFL roster was Philadelphia Stars punter Sean Landeta, who was signed in late 1986 by the New York Giants. He announced his retirement on March 6, 2008, the 25th anniversary of the first USFL game.

i met mrs. shockey when she worked for the usfl. at least two other prominent sports journos i know also ended up marrying lovely women of the usfl.

no usfl jokes allowed in this household. mrs. shockey still calls it the best working experience of her life.

I remember the USFL being called The Un-Satisfactory Football League and U Stupid ****ing Losers.
In all seriousness, though, I had a great time at a Boston Breakers game when I was in high school and one of the local high school coaches whom I know played for the Breakers in New Orleans and Portland.

Of all the ill-conceived attempts at a rival pro league that have been created since the AFL-NFL merger the USFL was the only one that came close to working. If they hadn't gotten greedy they might have made it.
