USFL Returning In 2010

I hope I am not committing a d_b here, but I saw this for the first time and couldn't believe my eyes.

The United States Football League is (going to try) coming back in 2010.

I lived in the Tampa area the first time around and although I did not see the Bandits play in person, I did see Washington and Philadelphia at a HS stadium in Winter Haven, FL in a preseason game.

Just can't believe anyone would want to resurrect it, even if there are still people who remember it fondly.

With all the other aspiring (and probably likely to crash-and-burn) leagues being created, why try this again? Could be worse: The World Football League of the early 1970s could be trying for a comeback -- or worse than *that*, XFL could come back <God help us if *that* happens>.

Maybe not but Pittsburgh "Maulers" was the greatest pro football nickname ever. And the helmet was awesome too.

The Pittsburgh Maulers folded after one year. Maybe you are thinking of the Michigan Panthers, whose team was combined with the Invaders to form the team that played in Oakland the final year of the league. Or maybe it was the last two.

Too bad we never got to see the run-and-shoot with Jim Kelly at quarterback and Herschel Walker at running back. The Gamblers and Generals were supposed to merge the year the league folded. That offense would have been fun to watch.

Somewhere in the deepest, darkest recesses of my parents' basement are several boxes of my stuff from my younger days. One box holds, among other things, a copy of The Sporting News USFL Preview Magazine for the league's first year. I need to dig that out next time I'm home.
