USFL Coverage

Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

I'm in Houston, and it'll make the weekend news broadcasts. However, so does college baseball, probably because the Astros are the only pro team alive right now, with the Rockets eliminated from playoff contention in October, roughly.

Not being snarky here, but why would anyone in (for example) Philadelphia care about its USFL team when it doesn't even play there? Outside of Birmingham, nobody has a home team.
I agree with this point.

I was surprised that in Week 1, the Birmingham game drew 17,500 fans. Not bad. Then I flipped on another game that same weekend, without the Birmingham “home team” playing, and it couldn’t have been more than 2,500. What’s the difference, other than the name on the jersey?

Interestingly enough, I have not seen the USFL report any attendance figures since that first game.

The USFL is embarrassing. You can’t find scores or stats on their webpage but you can sure as hell buy an NFT or get fired for wanting pizza

The Fox and NBC tv affiliates in NYC mention game results in their sports reports, probably because the two networks broadcast many of the games. Nothing about the USFL is ever said on the other tv stations.

If only this commitment to the USFL had a real possibility of yielding this outcome for Lachlan and his Daddy:

Not a lot of players have failed to live up to their hype and potential quite like Shea Patterson.

Ron Dayne comes to mind; 1999 Heisman Award winner misused by Jim Fassel and the NY Football Giants.

Dayne was at least a hell of a college player who won the Heisman. Patterson was one of the top QB recruits in his class, if not the No. 1 recruit. He was lauded as the savior of Ole Miss football. He showed some potential, then hurt his knee and bailed on Ole Miss when it got slapped by the NCAA. Transferred to Michigan and was touted as their next great QB. He wasn't terrible, but never really lived up to the hype of an elite QB prospect. Then he went undrafted and has bounced around practice squads and the CFL and USFL ever since. So he's just underwhelmed at almost every stop he's had.

On a side note, it's funny how Jordan Ta'amu seems to be his shadow. Ta'amu replaced him at Ole Miss; the two were briefly on the Chiefs' offseason roster in 2020; and now both are playing in the USFL.

I'll be curious to see if any USFL player makes the jump to the NFL and the regular season roster ala Rod "HeHateMe" Smart from the XFL.
