What the person was saying was Southwest has crushed any attempt to get some other transit option going because it wants to be the only option.

I can only think that person was saying that because he/she/they forgot to take his/her/their meds.

Can't remember reading a lot of stories about trains cancelling their runs because the crews can't get there.

Are there SWA-type problems in countries that have high-speed rail? I mean, if those socialists in Europe and the Japanese can do it, shouldn't Texans be able to? I mean, "Mericun exceptionalism! They're brilliant with power grids!

There is no true high speed rail in the U.S. Amtrak’s Acela service is marginally higher-speed for part of the route, but runs into issues along most of the corridor. Problem is, mush of the planning occurs piece-by-piece, instead of through the states, or corridor.

Just remember Southwest passengers: You don't actually want A-group boarding. On a full or mostly full flight, you actually want early to mid-B.

Sure: With A, you get to pick your seat. But with B, you get to pick who you sit next to, and that is wayyyyyyyyy more important.

Take an A aisle, and wait for Jabba the Hut to come strolling down to plop down next to you.

Or just be B, and find that nice doesn’t-fill-the seat small person (hopefully already with headphones in and a “no one talk to me” look on their face) and sit next to them.

Not a bad outlook but I'm "Exit Row" all day every day. The extra legroom is worth it plus Jabba rarely ventures there. Downside is that Christie Brinkley rarely does either....:(

I mean of course: Landing exit row changes the game.

But if you want to ensure a good seat mate, early B is the move.

I was reading just a week or so ago about the SW passengers who pay for preferred boarding for one member of the group and then expect: 1) that person to save seats for the whole group; and 2) everyone else to respect that seat-saving.

To hell with that. I'm as easygoing as they come, unless I feel as if I'm getting played. I'd be sorely tempted to sit somewhere other than where I want just so I could bust up some of that bull****.

Wrong. A Group, pick the seat you want, be ready to jump to another seat if Jabba shows up.

Meanwhile, I've been known to tell people who want my seat so they can sit next to a loved one, "sorry, I need to sit here so if we crash my body gets identified." That usually shuts them up (doesn't work on SWA, of course).

You're telling me that dying newspaper's computer systems are more up to date than Southwest's?

I've been a JetBlue guy (card, all the jazz) for ages, and for the most part they're hassle-free. They also don't fly to a few places I go, which is a bit frustrating. And they had their own meltdown in recent years.

Stunned that a billion-dollar company wouldn't have a backup system of a backup system. I'm sure some 12-year-old could set it up for them for a free flight to Disney.

One of my sisters and her family of four got stuck in Denver. They were supposed to fly back to the East Coast Sunday night. Managed to make it back today by getting on an American flight. Did not sound fun. We both use Southwest regularly since it has a big presence at our home airport, RDU, and our other sister lives in Boulder. I suspect it'll be a long time before she uses them again.
