Ahh, Pittsburg-Colgan: The best team money can buy in the state of Kansas.

Some of the private schools are bad, St. Thomas Aquinas and Bishop Carroll come to mind. But nobody buys state titles better than Colgan.

I never went to a private school, nor do I have any ties to southeast Kansas, but I've heard people say that a lot about Colgan. And yet, most of the best kids there are, 1) coach's sons, or 2) sons of parents you can probably find in yearbooks 20, 30, 40 years ago. I know that was the case with the kids who were part of the then-state record winning streak, because I did the research.

Re: Smith Center, this team is amazing. Mostly seniors, so there will be a drop off -- back to 45-7 wins -- when this class graduates in the spring. If only this team could somehow play Hutch this season.

Re: going for two, like Claflin during its dominant years, I doubt they have anyone who could kick well so they simply go for two every time. Small-town teams don't have soccer teams to pull a kicker from.

When I covered 9-man, a lot of teams always went for two for lack of a kicker.

My wife's cousin played at Smith Center when the current streak first started. There is no sign that they are running out of talent any time soon. The JV hasn't allowed a point, and the eight graders have allowed one touchdown.

Probably a safety and two field goals - given the fact the defense was playing so well and they didn't seem inclined to Bellicheck the second half.

Kids in pick up games intituitively know --whether it's hockey, football or baseball--that if scores are totally out of whack, you reshuffle the teams.

It's in western Kansas. They would probably have to drive several hours each way to find someone who could give them a game, and seven of their eight regular-season games were against conference opponents, so it's not like they're actively scheduling creampuffs.

It sounds like going for two is just normal for them.

9 TDs in first quarter x 8 = 72.

I can't imagine they would have had 11 possessions (8 TDs + PAT + 3 FGs).

That's pretty impressive. We had a team go on a similar run about 25 years ago. They shut out and blew out every single opponent for 11 straight weeks. In the second round of the playoffs, they gave up a touchdown on the first drive of the game and went on to lose to a team (John Curtis Christian) nobody had really heard of at the time.

That team (John Curtis) has now won 24 state titles and is widely considered one of the best high school football programs in the country.
