The UFC are suing New York in order to over turn the ban on MMA. I assume this is about publicity more than anything else.

It was unwise to tweet a joke about rape, but he did apologise and make a donation to a rape crisis centre. Plus for all we know he could have picked up that rape joke during his previous career as a policeman.

Actually, Tom Wright, who is White's proxy in Canada, talked about a similar approach in this country. There are four (I think) provinces whose laws would prevent a card.

They want that changed and talked about a legal challenge. It's pretty smart business by White. Think how much money and attention there would be if he got to hold a card in New York. And, if he wins in court there, maybe he can win in court anywhere.

I'm guessing that Fred doesn't think that MMA should be legal in New York. He also thinks that championship boxing matches still last fifteen rounds. I suspect that he is old.

I have no interest in UFC etc., but tuned in to the fight on Fox. What little action there was featured some very bad boxing, a couple of half-assed leg kicks then the one guy throws a right, which appeared to hit the champ's shoulder and cuff him in the head (not in the temple a Joe Rogan was maintaining).

The champ goes down - not appearing to be KO'd - again as Rogan claimed - the challenger jumps on top whacks him a few times and the ref stops it.

Now as a long-time boxing fan who has seen plenty of guys get badly hurt - and a few fatalities - I know it's better to stop a fight too early than too late, but, ****, if this had been a Don King promotion the fans would have been throwing **** in the ring and screaming "fix!".

If someone has a problem with mixed martial arts, they should at least get their facts straight before criticizing. He says there are "some rules" and makes it sound like it's "anything goes" which is pretty far from the truth.

Along with not knowing boxing matches are now 12 rounds, which someone already mentioned, makes it awfully hard to take this guy seriously when his knowledge is outdated.

A good shot behind the ear can totally knock off your equilibrium, as what happened to Velasquez.

I think it's tough for states to allow boxing, with all of its **** fights and corruption, but not MMA. (Heck, NYC is also a strong supporter of WWE.) And I say this as someone who has barely watched any MMA and doesn't care for it, and who has a casual interest in boxing. It definitely seems like boxing is more of a meat-grinder of a sport, with the caveat that MMA is still in its infancy and thus we might not know the long-term damage. (It does seem like there would be less worries about concussion / brain damage though, given the variety of strikes allowed, plus you don't have guys wailing on each others' faces for 12 rounds.)

I think the UFC filed the lawsuit to try and get MMA in New York because they're sure that it won't ever get legalized by going through the legislative process and they want the money that would come from being able to run someplace like MSG. It's almost been passed 2 or 3 times, but always died off before the governor could sign it into law, so Zuffa is taking matters into their own hands.

Sort of interesting the way MMA exploded in popularity after it got kicked out of the nation's largest metro market. Kinda like how the NFL soared to unprecedented heights right after losing LA. Sure as hell doesn't support all that "large markets are essential" bloviating.

Soon enough New York will have to re-think the ban regardless of how this suit turns out. When they enacted it, many thought this "human cockfighting" MMA thing was just a fad that would soon pass. Obviously that ain't the case. UFC is here to stay.

Plus, back when New York enacted the ban, MMA as a sport was almost nothing like what it is today. Much less regulated by states, more lax rule enforcement in the actual fights themselves and all kinds of craziness. Now, it's a legitimate sport and almost every state in the U.S. regulates it.

It's hard to imagine those guys getting any dumber than they already are, though.

It's because the blows to the head in hockey and the NFL, despite the competitors wearing helmets, are more numerous and more concussive by their nature (even with the helmets they wear). Yes, UFC fighters sometimes suffer concussions. But in the UFC, a lot of the time, a knockout comes from one or just a few blows. Not the multiple blows hockey and NFL players get.
Also, give MMA a few years and you might see them become more concussion-aware. The sport is still in its relative infancy.
