JUPITER, Fla. -- St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was arrested early Thursday and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor, after he was found asleep at the wheel in his running SUV at a green light.

La Russa's SUV was stopped at a light that, according to police, went through two cycles of green. A driver behind La Russa had to go around his vehicle, police said.

Police found La Russa slumped over in the driver's seat of the running SUV. The manager of the world champion Cardinals had his foot on the brake and did not respond to knocks on the window, police said. He finally woke up and parked the car.

Police said they noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath, and a field sobriety test was conducted.

The 62-year-old LaRussa was sent to the Palm Beach County Jail around 4 a.m., according to the jail's Web site. La Russa provided breath samples, which measured at a .093 blood alcohol level, police said. The legal limit for drivers in Florida is 0.08.

Damn, Simon.
Assuming that you're fairly young, isn't apnea unusual for someone of your age?
Tony, OTOH, seems fairly well hammered.

That sucks for La Russa. ... .093? Ouch.
He'd be able to argue that to a dismissal, I'm pretty confident.

He was asleep because he was tired, not because he was drunk.

.093 is barely tipsy.

If the legal limit is .08, .093 is legally drunk. Where is the wiggle room here?

I guess some states are more lenient than others.
In New Jesey, the lmit is .10, if you're over .10, your license is getting suspended, automatically, unless you can prove the breathalyzer malfunctioned.

.09 is 2 maybe 3 beers. Would say this is more a case of being tired than ripped, although it could point to some other potential health issues.

Too bad this didn't happen in St louis. As long as it was Anheuser-Busch product he was imbibing, they would have escorted him home.

Since no one was injured, is it too early to make a joke about how LaRussa can even slow up a green light?

Or how he should gone to the bullpen for a situational driver?

Your honor, with all due respect, my client has a long and celebrated history of being drunk on his own power. Didn't you read Men at Work?

Look, isn't it possible that Mr. LaRussa was simply closing his eyes at the stoplight, and attempting to visualize an at bat where he used four different relievers to pitch to Barry Bonds with no one on base and a three run lead in the eighth inning, with the left-handers throwing off-speed pitches for strikes, and the right handers trying to bust him high and tight with obvious balls?

This man is a genius, and frankly, the people who had to wait behind him at that stoplight for two successive light changes should feel honored that they got to see his genius up close. For free no less.

What matters is, Mr. LaRussa played the game of tipsy driving the right way. He waited for a stop light to fall asleep. He didn't showboat, or show up the police officer. He's too smart for that, and has too much integrity.

Did I mention how smart he is and how much integrity he has? In closing, I thank you.

That's a good lookin' mugshot. He looks rested, at least. Now what do I win?

With that, I may begin to avoid any and all of 21's posts for fear of a repeat.

Very strange. There's no way you can be passed-out drunk with a .093. And I doubt Tony's a lightweight.

Maybe he's on medication or something.
