This week's bizarre High School Basketball Score

Yes. I know, it's a terrible sacrifice to be a decent person and sportsman.
Let's not forget, one of the main reasons teams lose games by huge scores is, they don't give a ****.

I'm not arguing that superior teams should always ruthlessly crush inferior teams into the dust.

But if they decide to show mercy, it should be noted that mercy is made necessary by the incompetence or indifference of the inferior teams.

If that makes the inferior teams ashamed, well guess what: it probably should. Maybe there are other things they should be doing.

If it doesn't make them ashamed, if they refuse to judge their value as human beings on their performance in an athletic contest, good for them. So if they don't attach any profound meaning to losing a game by a big score, what do they care if they lose 163-2 instead of 93-22 or 73-42?

As a final footnote, if the talent mismatch is due to factors truly beyond everybody's control, then somebody is in the wrong league, and the game shouldn't be played at all.

It's a dilemma. In the league all of our local schools play in, there is one dominant football program, a multi-time section champion, along with five mostly equal teams, all of which usually get blown out in the first round when they make the playoffs.

The team wins most league games in the 58-14 range, often playing the fourth quarter with a running clock.

One of our coaches said their coach tells his opponents he will play his starters three quarters, then bring in subs. It's a lot for conditioning reasons, as he can't expect his kids to play 30 snaps in league then go to 60 in playoff games.

Alpha team doesn't want to change leagues, as the rest of its athletic programs are on par with its opponents.

Most of the high schools around here have gone to mega conferences of (ideally) 32 teams, which are divided into divisions in each sport on competitive basis every two or three years, so if a given team starts steamrolling everybody, they jump up to a better division, and if they can't compete, they drop down to the 'basement division .'

Of course some teams in the dungeon divisions STILL get smoked off the field/court every single game. That's the time you have to seriously ask yourself, 'what the hell are we doing here?'

One of our area girls teams won 77-2 a few weeks back. Winning team is only mediocre, though that's a major improvement over the past few years. Losing team only got off four shots, with the points coming on a shot just inside the 3-point line with time winding down. Losing team is also a pretty new school and is in the process of joining the state athletic association.

In years past, schools 'starting from scratch' usually play only JV competition for a season or two before jumping into varsity play.

Of course, in the brave new world of instant charter schools and co- op homeschooling teams, the potential for galactic-class mismatches goes up . You have some charter schools run by bible-waving fancy-pants and others little more than fronts for all-star teams of AAU street ballers.

This school in question is a science academy that's been around for only a few years, but looking to step up its athletic competition. It will be a slow process.

This was ridiculous beyond belief. The "winning" coach said he just lost control of things. No, this has been a pattern by looking at other scores of his team's games this season. He pulled this crap at the next-door town when he was there. He pressed the entire first half. The halftime score was 104-1. So he was pressing when it was 40-1. And 50-1. And 70-1. Oh, and 90-1. And for the hell of it, 100-1. Then backed off an only went to a halfcourt trap.

Noted: I know the AD at the winning school. And the losing school plays in the same league in which my brother is an AD at the school. Not hearing a lot back on what, if anything, happened in the aftermath of this abortion.

Pull. Your. Team. Off. The. Floor.

That's touchy. Yes.....they don't deserve to get ****-housed like that. But by pulling your team off the floor, you're telling them it's OK to quit......but on the other side of the coin......they don't need to get humiliated like that....

I can see either side.

As an official.....we're running the clock.......league rules or state rules be damned.

If I were coaching again, and it got to the point where we were losing by 50, 60, 70, etc etc and the other team would not let up, I would pull the team off the court and say I did it to "Protect the safety of my players and eliminate the chance for serious injury" and double dog dare anybody (opponents, league honchos, AD-principal) to do or say anything about it.

This weekend's halftime score: 47-9. Final: 87-28.

High school girls shooting 3-pointers in the second half? Coach being blasted for running up the score?

Nah, just the women's college game between No. 2 UConn and Southern Methodist.

161-2; full-court press until halftime (104-1); winning coach suspended two games.

Losing coach: “People shouldn’t feel sorry for my team. They should feel sorry for his team, which isn’t learning the game the right way,” Bloomington coach Dale Chung said.

Nice. So now we have a ****up coach who sends his team out to lose 161-2 making harrumphy snotty statements about 'playing the right way.'

A clue to the level of Bloomington's effort on the scoreboard: in the second half, they committed no (0) fouls.

If you want to run it up like that, be prepared for your players to get hurt. Hard fouls, elbows up.

I'm not a fan of some of the comments that the losing coach made. Sometimes the best advice is just STFU.

Well, if a team is losing 162-2, odds are real good they probably don't have much of a capacity to hurt anyone in any way.
