Does anyone have any insight into how those BASW books performed? As in how many copies were sold every year?

I lost enthusiasm for the series when my non-sportswriter wife made the honorable mention one year for a magazine feature while I never got a whiff in all my full-time sportswriting years. When this comes up at the dinner table I start throwing the vegetables.

Guessing now wouldn’t be the time to mention I reached honorable mention the first year I submitted….

A little weird that almost none of the stories on that list are about either COVID or the social justice protests, easily the two biggest stories in the sports world in 2020.

it's almost like the publication is centered around boutique journalism

What I don't get about the very worthy folks, many of whom I know, involved in this project, is that they don't select for TYPE of writing. Long feature, column, gamer, stories on tightest deadlines, enterprise, etc., etc. That'd be more realistic and frankly a way better read.

BASW lost its luster when KVV's story on Adam Muema was left out. It was the best American sports story of 2014. It was so riveting. Ballsy reporting too.

NFL: Adam Muema's message from God

That's very kind of you.

The series was kind enough to misspell my name in notables twice over the years, which seems like its own badge of honor.

Awards culture seems pretty...2010 or something. Yeah.

BASW is quite possibly the only sports-related entity that hasn’t misspelled my name!
