PSU scholarships reduced from 25 to 15 for four years.
Vacates wins from 1998 to 2011.
5 years probation
NCAA initiates its own investigation on individuals in addition to criminal actions.
PSU enters integrity agreement with NCAA and Big 10.
NCAA will appoint integrity monitor for five years.

Tough. I'm not a big fan of vacating the wins. Those players didn't have anything to do with what Sandusky and company did. But it could've been worse.

That's what I think, too. "Vacating" wins is always a ridiculous penalty to me, whether it's Coach Cal or Paterno. Silliness. What happened happened.

Thing with vacating that many wins is any story, etc., that talks about the all-time wins record will always have to mention that Paterno had 103 or whatever it is vacated. He'll still get mentioned in that company, even though by rights, he no longer should be.

I'm not normally a big fan of vacating wins either. In fact, I usually think it's silly. But this was part of the legacy that needed to be torn down.

You can no longer write, "Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in college football history." You either have to write, "Bobby Bowden, the winningest coach in college football history," or, "Joe Paterno, who was the winningest coach in college football history until it was found that he was covering for a pedophile." (Or something like that.)

The legacy is a big part of what created the whole sordid mess in the first place. It has to be irrevocably, irreparably shredded.

Meanwhile, $60 million is a lot of seed money. That's a big, big chance to do some good.

I can't disagree with any of the penalties. I vehemently disagree with the NCAA grabbing total power with no safeguards. Having grabbed this power, it will not give it up. It will be used again, and in a case much less clear-cut than this. Horrible precedent.

I understand the concern, although I will point out that among the NCAA's problems, indiscriminately dropping the hammer on name programs has never been a big one.

Williams & Amherst are probably a little worried this morning, though.

Wonder how many Penn State players will transfer here in the next couple of weeks. I could see a bunch of 'em hitting the road. Also, I could see a lot of 'em saying the hell with it and just riding out their education while on scholarship. So while the death penalty wasn't formally levied, in practice it may turn out to be just the same thing.

I have a feeling that the people termed by hokie as the "braying horde" aren't satisfied by this. Yet, had the NCAA stayed out of it, they would have personally carried flaming pitchforks to State College, Pa.
