Richard Ramirez terrorized the Southland and terrified 13-year-old me that summer because he'd pop up in random places night after night killing people. The Sunday morning L.A. news stations cut into whatever I was watching for the breaking news that he was captured was one of the happiest days of my life.

He killed 13 people that we know of.

Perhaps the only criminal who made me worried about my safety.

I was scared every night that he'd show up in Long Beach, in my neighborhood, crawl thru my window and kill me.

Always found Richard Ramirez to be a fascinating individual. Serial killers are my weird obsession. They're the most interesting people in the world, bar none.

Good. Just too bad it wasn't hooked up to a needle or standing in front of a firing squad.

I thought this was going to be about Darren McGavin.

Then you are a loser.

ETA; I hope he had a painful death, maybe stomache cancer and was given crappy pain killers. With any kind of luck his days were filled with pain and misery and he was unable to find solace or joy in anything.

He made me nervous because he was killing people in areas where my family lived. I was overseas in the military at the time.

I was happy when he was caught. Grateful now that he's gone.

Same for myself and my siblings -- and we were 60 miles to the east.

He scared the **** out of me back then ... and I lived in Wisconsin.

He scared the holy **** out of everybody in California that year... If memory serves he had murders that were several hours apart and I was splitting time between the Bay Area and Sacramento that summer and everybody was scared out of their ****ing minds...

Rest in hell...

Uh, OK. I didn't say I admired him. Clearly, he was a piece of ****. I said he and other serial killers are fascinating. My opinion, and it's shared by a lot of people. If you ever take a closer look at them, you might find they are interesting, too.

They're interesting only if you're obsessed with them.

They are psychotic, narcissistic, cowardly assholes to the rest of us.

BlackBerry is not a rarity. There's a reason serial killer movies are popular and A&E or whatever does those crime shows. There is definite interest.

Oh, yeah. Look at all the Death Row groupies. Talk about obsessions ...

Well, the subject line would have been accurate. He is dead -- and has been since February 2006. If memory serves, we even had a thread about it here.

I don't always kill people ... but when I do, it's usually a random stranger and based on a strong sexual desire involving my mother.
