The flu

I am so not used to being sick.

I have the flu. Other than copious amounts of knock-out drugs, any advice for getting through this little bit of misery?

Sleep and general rest. Catch up on your reading.

Lots of chicken soup and other fluids. Personally, I go with apple juice. About the only time I'll drink juice is when I'm ill.

Fluids, fluids, fluids. I find orange juice the best.

Yeah, thanks. I've been doing fluids all day. Last time I remember getting a virus, it got serious and I dehydrated, so I have been pounding gatorade preemptively all day.

I had to cancel something today because of it, so I have been either trying to nap (to no avail) or writing and tooling around on here all day. I hate this feeling. Just achy and feverish.

Oh, and SC, you had to go there, eh? Chicken soup?

I have a friend who makes fun of me a constant barrage of , "Go eat some lentils" comments. We talked earlier today and naturally he said, "You know what I like when I am sick? Lentil soup."

For the record, I don't eat lentils very often. Right now, it's pretty much Gatorade. Lots of it.

Had the flu last year. Worst two weeks in a long, long time. That prompted me to get a flu shot back in October. Just hoping they had the right flu strains in it.

The flu shot was apparently effective this year.

Pediatrician friend of mine said he's had 35 kids test positive for the flu. Only one of the 35 kids was vaccinated.

Right on. A friend recently had a bout with the flu -- he was so dehydrated, he ended up in the hospital for five days.

Didn't stop him from listening to a game he was planning to cover on the radio, and writing a column on it, though.

Here's my routine when I start feeling ill and it continues through the illness:

Strip my bedding and wash it with my towels, cloths, clothes and anything else I've touched in the past week. By some sort of antibacterial wipes and wipe down all light switches, phones, remotes, doorknobs, cupboard handles, etc.

I do that daily while I'm sick, to make sure I don't leave any germs anywhere for anyone else — myself included.

Juice, juice, juice. Both apple and orange. As much as I can stomach.

I take the maximum allowable dosage of vitamin C, too.

My entire daily intake of food is apples, oranges, bananas, carrots and chicken soup.

Call in sick. Stay in bed. Hot, hot shower before bed.

It may not all work, but it fools me into thinking it does. It sure makes the flu seem to pass faster.

Me likey flu shot. Maybe it's just coincidence (and it most assuredly is) but ever since I started getting them a few years ago, I barely catch a cold.

Along those lines, get some of the Emergen-C packets and throw one into a bottle of water. I know many people who swear by it, including myself.

It may not all work, but it fools me into thinking it does. It sure makes the flu seem to pass faster.

I'm convinced these "psychological placebos," so to speak, are just as important as actual medicine when it comes to fighting off sickness.
