My mom, 76 years old, still says LBJ had Kennedy killed.

I don’t think he did, but as you read through Caro’s “The Passage of Power,” you do see motivation. You know he had the ability, given his skullduggery during college, the Little Congress and his time as Senate leader. And I truly believe he was a sociopath. There’s just no evidence to build a case, which you have to assume would have surfaced over last 60 years.

I went to a conference in September, and one of the speakers was Daniel Jolley, a psychologist at the University of Nottingham who specializes in the psychology of conspiracy theories. One of the points he stressed was how common belief in conspiracy theories is, with millions of people saying they believe in at least one. Are they all "paranoid" and have "crippled minds"? Or are they people looking for a sense of certainty and control in a chaotic, unfeeling existence? There is a certain reassurance that comes with knowing someone is in charge of all this, even if they are often (in the believer's mind) a malevolent force.

Watching that video does make me want to point out one thing, at least the way I see it. I don't consider the simple denial of facts as a conspiracy theory.
For example:
Vaccines are harmful and not helpful = poor judgement/simple ignorance of science/etc.
Vaccines contain government microchips = conspiracy theory.

Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds was required reading for some of my colleagues at their undergraduate schools in anth and psych. It is a neat bit of proto-anth, proto-psych behavioral science that was first published in 1841. I recommend it with the caveat that it is an early European exploration of that set of ideas.

My mom thinks every medical/behavioral disorder discovered after the ‘60s is made up to cover for the fact that younger people are wimps.

That is not an isolated belief. Don't know how many times I've heard, "S/He's just a brat." ::sigh::
