Compared to 4-5 times for talking on the phone or being drunk. Somehow I doubt offenders will be shunned or punished like drunk drivers, though.

The first study of drivers texting inside their vehicles shows that the risk sharply exceeds previous estimates based on laboratory research — and far surpasses the dangers of other driving distractions.

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, which compiled the research and plans to release its findings on Tuesday, also measured the time drivers take their eyes from the road to send or receive texts.

In the moments before a crash or near crash, drivers typically spent nearly five seconds looking at their devices — enough time at typical highway speeds to cover more than the length of a football field.

The researchers said that even though trucks take longer to stop and are less maneuverable than cars, the findings generally applied to all drivers, who tend to exhibit the same behaviors as the more than 100 truckers studied. Truckers, they said, do not appear to text more or less than typical car drivers, but they said the study did not compare use patterns that way.

Compared with other sources of driver distraction, “texting is in its own universe of risk,” said Rich Hanowski, who oversaw the study at the institute, which is affiliated with Virginia Tech.

I'm shocked that it's only 23 times. A few years ago, I thought: Texting and driving? No one's that stupid.

Damn, I hate being wrong.

Why wouldn't it be higher. You're freaking typing while driving.

People shave, put on make-up, read, get road head and watch porn while they're driving. Why does the fact they text surprise you?

No, but she has been sending out random STFU texts and she does not know why.

From the Autobahn.

What the hell do you people have against multitasking?

I can't imagine how much she'd annoy me if she was alive. :D

As for the thread topic, I'm sure happy to own an iPhone. The touch screen keys make it virtually impossible for an uncoordinated guy like me to type and drive. Good thing ... I'd much rather perish trying to eat a rack of ribs while switching lanes in an ice storm.

Honestly ... regardless of my past refrains on this topic ... I'll be saying the same thing when I get a QWERTY keyboard phone. Only reason I feel comfortable texting while driving now is because I don't have to look down to do it; I've memorized the 9-digit keypad.

When I get my iPhone in January, there's no way I'll be able to text and drive at the same time. Even if I want to. :D

I actually text much better with the QWERTY keyboard. Don't have to watch out for how many times you hit the 5 key to get two "l"s and not some symbol. :D

Heck yes they should be villified. I can barely tolerate cell-phone driving. To actually look down at a screen? Ridiculous.
