Sen. Stevens of Alaska faces criminal charges

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sen. Ted Stevens from Alaska, the longest serving U.S. Republican senator ever, was indicted on seven counts related to his holding of public office, a federal law enforcement official said on Tuesday.

The U.S. Justice Department has scheduled a news conference for 1:20 p.m. to make an announcement "regarding a significant criminal matter." The official said the news conference would announce the criminal charges against Stevens that have been returned by a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C.

Perhaps it's connected to this...

From CBS:

Stevens faces seven counts of false statements involving VECO, the oil services company in Alaska, and the renovations done on his home.

From AP:

From May 1999 to August 2007, prosecutors said Stevens concealed "his continuing receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of things of value from a private corporation." The indictment released Tuesday said the items included: home improvements to his vacation him in Alaska, including a new first floor, garage, wraparound deck, plumbing, electrical wiring; as well as car exchanges, a Viking gas grill, furniture and tools.

Some lawmakers are remembered for powerful, historically significant oratory such as the Gettysburg Address, waving the bloody shirt and "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

Stevens' signature moment of oratory will always be, "It's a series of tubes."

Yeah but he's got a sweet Viking grill...

Can you imagine the idiocy of our country in that this senator, a full-blown ****ing idiot, who knows nothing of the internet except that it is a series of tubes, is (was) the chairman of Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation?

Holy ****, complete doddering idiots (literally) running our country.

I'm pretty sure he's not gay, though. What the heck more do you want?

Ace drives one deep to center ... DEEP TO CENTER! GONE! Wow! He crushed that one 450 feet!

Stevens was the one, who, threatened to walk out the Senate chamber when other senators were complaining about his $270 million bridge to nowhere.

Hey Stevens, don't let the door hit you in in the ass on the way out!

The man is 84 years old and still in congress.

I willing to bet that Robert Mugabe would post his bail hearing the news about these charges.

Don't blame him. Blame the Alaskans that voted for him every election. There's a price you pay for democracy.
