All I can say is Jay-boy never disappoints.

That's oil and water, and I'm not surprised, but given Ebert's chronic condition, that was tasteless -- but consider the source.

No one gave more blood to that place than I did, and if I decide it's going to die an imminent death, it's my call. And based on events of the last four months, I couldn't have been more accurate. The place is dead.

Seems to me that the Sun-Times ain't dead. At least not on this date.

He makes a valid point that newspapers need to do a better job of implementing the web. But instead of hammering editors and writers, he should be raising reasoned criticisms of publishers and corporations that own newspapers. Instead of slashing newsroom jobs, newspapers need to start hiring more copy editors and writers and web producers. If we are in the midst of a 24 hour news cycle, newspapers need people to work the overnight shifts.

Even Jay Mariotti, no matter how boorish, snarky or outright hostile he might be, is righted to a response.

But his choice of words, as usual, was poor.

Stay classy, Jay.

Mariotti yaps about all the time he spent away from home, as if that is some exception to a columnist rule. He, of course, fails to mention how many times he actually spent at home instead of the White Sox locker room. And, of course, he fails to mention how the S-T gig gave him the platform for all the TV he does.

The Web site "issue" excuse is an absolute copout lie.

Great line in the comment section after the story...

I guess being extremely lightheaded all the time might explain some of Mariotti's horrible bull****.

True, Simon.

Mariotti blew up, talked himself out of a job and then invented his dire concern about the Internet.

I wonder what it's like when he actually does visit a press box and bumps into former Sun-Times colleagues.

The reigning king of the "Who? Me? Interact?" types.

This was buried further down in the interview:

And I still might be writing in Chicago very soon, but it won't be with the Sun-Times-like frenzy that I thought was required at the underdog, struggling paper.

Running out the clock . . . waiting . . . waiting . . .

Somehow, we can wait.

When JM wrote about the BCS title game, he did so from home (well, at least there was no dateline on the story) and still didn't post until 4:30 a.m. Eastern, almost five hours after the game ended. No frenzy there .........

At least he didn't take credit for Obama's presidency. Oh wait...

"I also couldn't help but think back to '04, when Obama might have lost the U.S. Senate race in Illinois had Mike Ditka chosen to run. I was among those who suggested Ditka shouldn't run because he'd be faced with intense scrutiny in his personal and professional life. If Ditka had run, maybe Hillary would be president today. Or Ditka."

(If he, or anyone, thinks Ditka had a snowball's chance of winning that election...)

What, sports columnists really don't get to be with their family all the time like on Everybody Loves Raymond? Such a disappointment.

I think even Ditka could've beaten Alan Keyes.

Ditka's a Republican, hence Keyes took his spot. Da Coach actually endorsed Alan Keyes over Obama. There was a great picture of them, arm in arm, on the front page of the Sun-Times.

I can't remember who did the interview, but someone asked Obama, theoretically, what would he have done if he had to run against Ditka instead of Keyes. Obama said something to the effect of he would have asked if you really want to vote for a guy who gave the ball to Refrigerator Perry instead of Walter Payton in Super Bowl XX.

The guy comes up with elegant line after elegant line.

You just shake your head in wonderment.
