Question for oldsters more veteran journos: Are pensions safe when a company goes under? I don't mean all the extra bennies, like health-care bridges to Medicare and stuff. I just mean the cold, hard cash that has been promised and projected.

They weren't safe for United. And this article, from 2005, said 20 companies had defaulted on pensions.

Probably not but they will be able to report Johnny Jockstrap, an undrafted rookie out of Southwestern ****sville State signed a one year deal and scroll it on from ESPN to ESPNU to ABC Family.

I'm not going to take a lot of time looking it up right now, but I believe Congress and Bush put together a law a couple of years ago that protects pensions to at least some extent.

Ouch. Almost out of college here...

Sadly - or intelligently - I already have a list about five jobs deep that I would consider if I can't make it long term one way or another in journalism.

I wouldn't be surprised to see ESPN try at one point to have a reporter for each NFL team in the way Scout and Rival do for colleges.

It will not surprise me at all if in the next 2-3 years we just start seeing papers folding all over the place.

It's not.

It's really not. I know that Seattle is whacking, and I've heard that Houston's probably going to start trimming in the near future.

Smart move, EnZona, and one that every other J-student should take heed. I'm fortunate that I have options, but truly feel sorry for the older guys who will be facing the receiving end of cuts down the road. It's a bad time.....
