Is this really unreasonable?

If you're a craftsman, shouldn't you possess the tools necessary to practice your craft?

It's standard in other industries.

For a low-paying newspaper to have this kind of requirement, yes, it's unreasonable.

And you know what "egos and attitudes" actually means in this job ad? Self-respect and an unwillingness to be walked all over.

Imagine if every company required employees to buy their own desks, computers, and phones.

This is the requirement that would disqualify you:

We have no room for egos or attitudes. If you have either, this job and this company are not for you.

I work in a field where having an ego and attitude is one of the bare minimum requirements. Next time I need advice on how to lose jobs in government, airline industries, and with MLB clubs, I'll let you know.

The Union Daily Times in Union, S.C. – a Tuesday through Saturday daily community newspaper owned by Civitas Media LLC – needs a full-time sports writer who can bolster its sports coverage for print, the web, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms and maintain the standards of journalism expected by Civitas Media.

We need a hard worker, a multi-tasker, someone with a knack for sports reporting, a flair for writing and a commitment to making our publication the best it can be in print and online. We need someone who can help produce a 24/7/365 sports report that is second to none in content and quality in print and online.

I've taken pride in taking photos and writing a story, but I agree with those who think this job posting is asking too much. It's one thing to take photos while writing, but I don't think you should require them to have their own high-quality SLR. Those can run thousands, easily. Especially when you count how expensive the high-end lens with the 2.8 f-stop and can zone across the field and get a close up of the other sideline.

I would hope this position would pay $40,000 to justify being required to spend money on a decent camera and not just something from Best Buy or Walmart.
