Description:
SPORTS REPORTER
The News-Press & Gazette Co. in St. Joseph, Mo., has an immediate opening for a sports reporter with multimedia skills and interest. The position involves daily reporting on sporting events and writing other sports news and feature stories for multiple platforms. Some page design and editing also is required. The staff's efforts are focused primarily on coverage of local and regional high schools and several competitive college programs in our 21-county area.
This position requires someone who is comfortable with multiple roles producing quality content for the print edition (the News-Press), our digital platform (newspressnow.com) and social media channels. Our converged newsroom also includes a broadcast television station (FOX 26 KNPN). All reporters are expected to develop their skills and contribute to the station's content by providing scripts and video and making on-air appearances.
The core requirements include a bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications, plus experience as a sports reporter (internships or experience on a college newspaper will be considered). Multimedia experience is a plus, but strength in print reporting is essential. A valid driver’s license and a safe driving record also are required. Employment is contingent on passage of a drug screening and a background screening. Midwestern candidates are strongly preferred.
Prospective candidates should make their interest known as soon as possible. Send a brief letter of introduction, current resume, names of three references, and three to five examples of your best work to: Dennis Ellsworth, Executive Editor, St. Joseph News-Press. E-mailed applications are welcomed at [email protected]. The mailing address is 825 Edmond St., St. Joseph, MO 64501; the phone number is (816) 271-8550.
News-Press & Gazette Co. is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
