The Sanford Herald, an 8,500-circulation daily newspaper in the heart of North Carolina, seeks Sports/Weekend editor to drive sports coverage and assist the Editor in managing and leading a six-person newsroom staff. Sports duties include covering our two major high schools, two local private schools and six high schools in surrounding counties. News duties include daily budgeting, editing news stories, updating web page, improving our online presence (videos, social networking, podcasts, etc.) and overseeing newsroom operation in editor’s absence.
The Herald, winner of 25 awards in the N. C. Press Association’s 2011 News & Editorial Contest, including first place in General Excellence, is located 40 minutes southwest of Raleigh and 30 minutes south of Chapel Hill. We are 30 minutes from Pinehurst, host of the 2014 men's and women's U.S. Open. E-mail resumes to Editor R. V. Hight at [email protected]. Please include writing samples. This position assists the Editor in providing leadership, management and training of The Herald’s news staff, including the establishment and maintenance of sound professional standards and the planning, editing and production of all Herald products. Other duties include writing editorials and a regular sports column, as well as participating in community activities and dealing with the general public on matters concerning news policies and practices.
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field strongly preferred. Experience managing and editing at a daily newspaper is desired. Strong sports-news judgment and content management a must.
