Description:
The journalism industry is changing fast. Syracuse Media Group is succeeding on the cutting edge of that change. The latest Scarborough survey shows syracuse.com is America's No. 1 newspaper website. Scarborough consistently puts our newspaper, The Post-Standard, in the ranks of the best-read newspapers in America. (You might have seen that the Syracuse University basketball team also has done very well this season.)
We have an opening on our print publications team for a Page Producer who specializes in sports. Familiarity with the full range of sports and an appreciation for the value of local sports -- especially high school sports -- is a must. You're the perfect candidate if you're always thinking about the reader experience, believe in serving those readers and love to develop ideas for presenting information in new ways. We're looking for candidates with a mix of skills: Strong copy editing, a respect for deadlines, an ability to design pages on the fly and experience with InDesign. A familiarity with Saxotech, our publishing system, is a plus.
In this job, you'll use your judgment, editing skills and creativity to make our pages appealing and letter-perfect. We expect decision-makers at all levels of our operation, so you'll have a voice. You'll work closely with the Sports curator and the reporting teams, but you'll be expected to think and act on your own. We are a seven-day-a-week newspaper in beautiful Upstate New York. We are proud of our sports section, and we keep it robust, comprehensive and visually stimulating.
To be a good fit as a Page Producer, Sports, you will have:
A bachelor's degree in journalism, English or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Three or more years of solid newsroom experience.
Strong writing and copy editing skills.
A demonstrated ability to package and paginate news.
Experience using design and production software such as InDesign. Experience with Saxotech is a plus.
The creativity to produce attractive pages that follow style guidelines.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Great attention to detail, including strong copy editing, proofreading and fact-checking skills.
