Sports Editor, Yahoo! Front Page

Description:

We're looking for a sharp, creative editor to help sustain the intelligence, relevance and excitement of Yahoo!’s homepage. You will be joining the editorial team behind our successful Today Module at the top center of Yahoo.com, programming content for the largest audience on the Web.

The ideal candidate will have a feel for what works on the Web, a thorough grasp of the competitive landscape, strong news judgment, a keen awareness of what’s buzzy and, of course, a deep knowledge of sports. We are looking for someone with a passion for sports, who also knows how to engage a mass audience. You should be flexible, quick-thinking, energetic, efficient, and able to work independently under pressure while maintaining attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills are a must, as this position requires interacting with fellow editors and employees throughout Yahoo!

Responsibilities:

Updating Yahoo!’s front page with fresh, compelling, and relevant content

Making great choices, crafting clever headlines and tease copy, choosing and cropping appropriate images

Understanding the Yahoo! audience and its interests

Pitching ideas for blog posts and articles on the most buzzed-about topics

Weekly budgeting and advance planning for news events

Managing competing priorities, fielding pitches from diverse sources, budgeting time

Requirements:

A solid grounding in the basic principles of packaging, editing, and writing for the Web and a minimum of five years experience working in a dynamic online editorial environment

Demonstrable headline writing, image selection, and content packaging skills

A thorough understanding of editorial best practices and priorities, and an authoritative grasp of the AP Stylebook

Ability to work quickly and remain cool when responding to breaking news or deadline pressure

Candidates with sports journalism and portal experience are preferred.

Basic HTML skills, Photoshop skills, and experience with online publishing tools

B.A. required, preferably in journalism or media

This job will be based in Santa Monica or New York. No relocation reimbursement.

The lack of relocation reimbursement seems odd for a job of this caliber. Is that a sign a mortal might have a shot at it?

I think it is a sign that they already know who they want for the job.

No, it hasn't been offered in a while. This isn't with the sports team directly, but with the Front Page team (what you see when you go to Yahoo.com as opposed to sports.yahoo.com).

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
Someone must've been hired, since the link page says the job listing is no longer available.

Yes, the job has been filled, but I don't know who got it. It wasn't me. Efforting.

See, that's why you didn't get the job. Effort is not a verb.

Just funnin' with you, MH. Wish it could have been you. Good luck in your pursuit. I know you'll come up good.
