Every state championship team deserves a parade, and the next sports editor for The Chronicle — the newspaper of record for Lewis County, Washington — will understand why.
We’re a prep sports-obsessed community, and that makes up the vast majority of our local sports coverage. You’ll find plenty of content from the 12 local high schools (and one community college) to fill our six-page, three-day-a-week sports section.
But if you’re looking to sit behind a desk, assign stories, and edit copy, think again. Our sports editor will cover games, stay involved in the regional sports scene on several social media platforms, and shape the overall tone and style of the section.
It’s a challenging job, but for the right sportswriter, it’s the most fun you’ll ever have at work.
Here’s a few more details:
• Expect to be out of the office a few nights a week covering games, and traveling during the playoff seasons. We staff state basketball, football, baseball and softball tournaments every year.
• Prep sports is the main focus, but we’re always on the lookout for features on local athletes playing at the next level and out-of-the-ordinary sports features.
• Pound-for-pound, The Chronicle’s sports team has one of the largest social media footprints in the Pacific Northwest. Expect to get involved in the local Twitter sports scene (a thick skin and a sense of humor is a must), contribute to Facebook and Instagram accounts, and manage a quirky local sports podcast with a cult following.
• Strong leadership skills are a plus. You’ll manage one full-time reporter and coordinate with our photo staff, a part-time sportswriter, and a few freelance reporters and photographers.
• Layout skills are big help, although most of our layout is done by our in-house designers. We use InDesign, and you’ll be responsible for creating a budget and using your regional news judgement to fill pages with the type of sports news our readers want to see. About the paper
The Chronicle is the flagship paper of the Laframboise Communications chain, a family-owned company for over 100 years. Our headquarters is in downtown Centralia, Washington, and you’ll be required to live within our coverage area and be flexible with your office hours. You’ll be a part of a veteran management team and an award-winning newsroom, and be expected to coordinate some areas of coverage with our two weekly sister papers.
About the area
Centralia is located in Southwest Washington, right on Interstate 5 with Seattle a 90-minute drive north and Portland a 90-minute drive south.
